Covid-19 discussion

Do you have any close friends/neighbors who might be interested in going halvsies with? You could have them pick up their portion from from you (so no extra work for you).

Possibly, havenā€™t had luck though with that in the past, unfortunately. Wish I knew anyone in my building, though. The summer of 2018 we were having other people pick up boxes SO OFTEN it was ridiculous. Thatā€™s why we didnā€™t renew for last summer.

Just a thought, but I wouldnā€™t be surprised if more people are thinking about it right now, given the climate, and if you put the word out you might get some takers (especially since a half box is less of a committment). :woman_shrugging:

I might do. how to ask neighbors in building when none of us are going in the hallway anymoreā€¦

I donā€™t think so. Looking at the rules, everyone has to stay at home, the only exception is ā€œessential errandsā€ (like grocery/doctor) or a walk provided you stay 6 feet away from others. Iā€™m bummed out because my contractors would be safe working in my basement if it were just one guy, but it wonā€™t be allowed.

Notes under/on doors?

I was considering that. I do have a whole house full of shipping supplies, cute ass stationary, and cat stickers. My neighbors definitely know ~someone~ in the building ships out cat stuff, since they often see 3+ crates of cat-stamped envelopes for waiting for USPS pickup.

Maybe I have notes and a note to where I have set up a group text thread. Itā€™s frustrating we canā€™t even leave up notes in public areas to reach out to neighbors, as the building management takes them down. Weā€™re not even a super-big building. ~40 units, and many people have lived here fo 6 or 7 years - and the building is only 7 years old!

And assure them in the note that you have been isolating and washed your hands with soap before writing the notesā€¦

I kind of figured that. Wellā€¦ I might have plenty of time after we reopen to catch up and do random organizing and cleaning since I am almost positive sales will tank this year.

Yeah :frowning:

Yikes, a friend in the Bay Area reports that her neighbor got a $400 ticket for hiking?! Maybe she was closer to someone else than 6 feet?

And that according to their order, they cannot go outside on weekends even for exercise, and she has to carry papers proving she is an essential retail employee? Damn.

Were they in a park that is closed? (Edit: Or doing something or being somewhere that is otherwise illegal anyway, like being in a closed portion of a parkā€¦) As far as I am aware, cities have taken different takes on this, with some being open and some ARE closed (city parks, that is). MOST state parks and national parks are still open, at least, trails are, therefore one would NOT be fined for this, but campgrounds are closed and buildings are closed. And not sure about county parks, since they are a different agency. (Source: close friends in the Bay Area. And friends in the NPS.)

My parents are driving me crazy. I live in NYC, and theyā€™re freaking out that my wife and I arenā€™t leaving. They keep trying to get us to come up with contingency plans and scenarios where weā€™d leave. I think I make it worse because they present things in such an extreme way (ā€œmaybe you should rent a car now for the next few months in case you need to leave and cars arenā€™t availableā€ likeā€¦what???) that I get defensive and push back.

I havenā€™t lived at home in a decade, am financially stable with a job where I will keep getting paid throughout this, and have a wife to support me in any decisions we have to make. Weā€™re both being careful about social distancing and only going out for solo exercise in the park, grocery runs, and occasional takeout. Itā€™s not like we arenā€™t taking it seriously. We are smart, reasonable people who could figure out what to do if shit hit the fan. And frankly, Iā€™d rather stay here with a competent governor, lots of tests (more per capita than China or South Korea!), and my very good city health insurance. Plus, this thing is coming to the whole country. I know NYC is a hot spot right now, but nowhere is really ā€œsafeā€.

This whole thing is crazy enough. Iā€™m grateful to say Iā€™m in a good mental state about it - balancing the gravity of the situation/being prepared with being optimistic/trying to make use of this semi-quarantine. I donā€™t want to have to manage my parentsā€™ anxiety on top of all of it.

And then I just feel guilty Iā€™m spending this time where weā€™re supposed to ā€œreconnectā€ bickering with my parents, who I usually get along with just fine.

Iā€™m not sure, honestly.

Here, park spaces are open but playgrounds on park property, and park buildings, are closed.

You have sound reasoning @zygote - sorry your parents are pushing their anxieties onto you.

Having to manage a parentā€™s anxiety sucks. Iā€™m sorry they are putting you in this position.

Can you contact your preferred CSA(s) and see if they are seeing a spike in subscriptions? If they donā€™t really need your business (shares are already in high demand), then probably best to leave a share for someone else. If they are hurting and could use your support, then subscribing is a way to help them make it through another season.

They donā€™t really have many left, most people subscribe for many years. I think they only have 2-3 left for the season.

Like CalBal said - Bay Area orders explicitly allow hikes, but some parks are closed. Iā€™ve had cops pass me by numerous times without any interaction, and most of my local parks (but not all) are open.
