Covid-19 discussion

Booster shot approved for (some?) immunocompromized people in the US.

it turns out that all the neon hearts that we see on our walks around the neighbourhood are a neighbourhood phenomenon, and itā€™s a local product.

I just listened to the CDC meeting on that - very interesting!

Immunocompromised people are 2.6% of the US population but 44% of the people hospitalized with breakthrough infections.

The people with the poorest response to vaccination are organ transplant patients, which makes sense.

This is incredibly valuable to know- i grabbed an article with this in case anyone else needs to cite it/send it to someone.

So I just saw that true CDC updated the list to include a bigger list of immunosuppressed people than initially only solid organ transplants and chemo.

ā€œ Friday, members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices tried to clarify who that included ā€” though they acknowledged that there are no hard and fast definitions and encouraged patients to speak with their doctors about whether an additional dose is needed. The CDC discouraged the use of antibody tests to determine whether a patient needed an additional dose, however, because there are no FDA-approved tests to measure antibody levels after vaccination.ā€

But unfortunately people who got J&J (me) are not included in this because they donā€™t have enough data. MFer

My 29 y/o cousin who has Chrons and is on a TNF blocker, and lives in Connecticut got a 3rd shot yesterday from
CVS. She was on it fast. So if you are in the us and immunosuppressed (including TNF blockers) the 3rd shots seem easy to get.

ā€¦ me just waiting on J&J data

Need to prod my cousin on chemo to see if heā€™s getting one. Is there a reason you canā€™t take the mRNA shots?

Ugh Iā€™m trying to decide if I want a booster. I feel weirdly reluctant to get a third shot and not sure why. Part of me wants to wait until Iā€™m closer to 6 months from my second shot for ā€¦ totally superstitious reasons?

(Iā€™m on TNF inhibitors and canā€™t find much clear data on how they interact with the covid vaccine.)

I can take it no problem, but the CDC havsnā€™t authorized the 3rd shot for immunosuppressed people who got J&J yet because there isnā€™t data on it. They hope to have data ā€œsoonā€.

American College of Rheumatology has a list of how different TNF inhibitors and other immunosuppressants interacts with the covid vax.

A comprehensive listing of all the different studies on immunsuppressants and Covid Vaccines:

Folks who have had Covid - if you lost your sense of taste, did it fade away or vanish all at once? Not asking for a friend, unfortunately.

Oh no! If it helps, I think I read recently that someone here had a cold and lost their sense of taste but was negative for covid.

Yeah, mineā€™s not gone, just less than it should be, so I donā€™t know.

The study compilation link is awesome, thank you.

I should really just ask my rheumatologist but uhhhh sheā€™s on vacation for a couple weeks. :grimacing:

My sister said hers went away pretty quick. She went from normal to canā€™t smell my deodorant or Vicks* in one night.

*Of course we traveled with Vicks to a carribean resort. Itā€™s part of the Latino packing checklist.

Yes me! I lost completely all sense of taste and smell for 5 days except for sweet and salty. I had runny nose, head ache, aches and pains and exhaustion too, the baby had fevers. Both myself and the baby got tested and we were both negative.

I lost my sense of taste with a horrific cold turned sinus and cheat infection/this spring. I had three or four negative tests and my pulse oxygen was repeatedly remarkably high for the amount of coughing I was doing, and weā€™ll above covid ranges.

I do think that losing taste and smell is something that Iā€™ve had a few time before. With covid it seems to be more common and is neurological and not local if Iā€™m understanding right.

I have that ā€œthings taste funnyā€ or ā€œthings taste metallicā€ and ā€œthat smell isnā€™t as strong as I expectedā€ with a lot of regular colds.

Everyone I know who has had covid had ā€œI stuck my nose in a container of bleach and smelled nothingā€

(But Iā€™d still get tested if I was you.)

If anyone is looking for masks for very small faces, I recommend these. Adjustable ear straps, has a band on the nose.

They are great for my 2-year old, but too small for my 4-year old.

For me, my loss of taste was pretty gradual. There were a few days where things tasted muted or strange. Then I lost my taste completely for a week or so, and it gradually came back over the following month.

So sorry this is happening! Do you have a positive test?

My aunt is a badass. We had my grandmotherā€™s funeral this past weekend with family from many states. Masks during the service, then a rapid testing station in the yard for the family reunion with a negative result required. She rocked up with 22 rapid covid tests and a picnic table. :love_you_gesture::love_you_gesture::love_you_gesture:
