Covid-19 discussion

Good article about risks of outdoor transmission.
(Spoiler: Likely MUCH lower than the CDC guidance implies)

My neighborhood did a socially distant Halloween, and we nearly all agreed it was the best one ever. It was a warmer than normal Halloween, but some people sat outside at firepits, others spread their candy on their driveways or porches for people to pick up, but no interaction.

I hope we donā€™t return to knocking on doors.

Ohio is holding a lottery for vaccinated people!

Under 18, you can win a full ride scholarship to any of the state universities.

18+ you can win $1 million.

I feel like this is going to bring a lot of vaccine hesitant people in, so a great idea!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a nonprofit that is focused on aiding India with COVID relief? My boss suggested doing a corporate donation and Iā€™d like to get the most help I can to them.

I know @anomalily was saying thereā€™s limited foreign money that can come in because ofā€¦ something? Bat signaling her

SEWA International and Give2Asia are the two theyā€™re currently advertising at work (extra corporate match opportunities).

Wow, under 18 gets screwed here. Hope they provide room and board in this offer too.

They do! And books! Seems like a good deal.

I mean, Iā€™d still rather have the million dollars.
Do they guarantee admission for the winner too? At least Ohio has good state schools. Not every state does.

Itā€™s a very cool idea.

I did Oxfam India, I think.

Iā€™ve seen GiveIndia mentioned on social media and the news as a worthy organization.

One of the hospital mailing lists Iā€™m on recommended these organizations to get resources where to where theyā€™re most needed on the ground:
SWASTH
American India Foundation
Sewa International

Sewa International USA also has a convenient Facebook fundraiser, which I can see a number of friends have donated to:

Hereā€™s an article on the difficulty of putting international donations to use on the ground in India:

For those with a paywall:
"But a sweeping change to Indiaā€™s decades-old law governing foreign donations is choking off foreign aid just when the country needs it desperately. The amendment, passed by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September with little warning, limits international charities that donate to local nonprofits.

The effect is far reaching. Almost overnight, the amendment gutted a reliable source of funding for tens of thousands of nongovernmental organizations, or NGOs, that were already stretched thin by the pandemic. It prompted international charities to cut back giving that supported local efforts ā€” and supplemented the governmentā€™s work ā€” in fields such as health, education and gender.

The amended law has forced newly formed charities to rush to find NGOs that can accept their donations without tripping legal wires. And it has smothered nonprofits in red tape: To receive foreign funds, charities must get affidavits and notary stamps and open bank accounts with the State Bank of India, which is government-owned."

Personally, Iā€™ve splitting my donation among several of these organizations.

I think itā€™s through the lottery, and I donā€™t think you can play the lottery if youā€™re under 18.

Well, masks are basically done in the US.
CDC says vaccinated people donā€™t need them. Anti-vaxxers already wonā€™t wear them.

So that just leaves kids wearing them, I guess.

I really hope our daycare teachers keep wearing them. The CDC states it as the vaccinated person being protected, not necessarily those around them. (Iā€™m still not clear if a vaccinated person can spread the virus.)

My understanding: we can, but itā€™s an incredibly low viral load. Making it both unlikely except with high exposure and an immune compromised target, and a milder course?

Whatā€™s considered high exposure?

I mean the daycare teachers are with my kids more than I am, indoors probably 90% of the time. Most of the kids are masked, but not socially distanced. Is that high exposure?

With the kids masked I doubt it would count as high exposure, but Iā€™m not an expert.

I have the same question and will be asking the daycare on Monday. My very small child is too young to wear a mask or be vaccinated so Iā€™m hoping all teachers continue to wear masks until we see how things go with this next phase of the pandemic (the reopening etc)

hmm Pugletā€™s daycare just sent an email yesterday saying that itā€™s now mandatory that all kids 5 and up have to wear a mask at all times. Mr. Pug and I were like why are they making things more strict when our state is doing so well???

ETA: This instruction came from the EEC
