Most people I know here are unable to get delivery because the stores are so backed up, or else they’re booking deliveries and then having them cancelled. The demand is just too great.
But, I mean… if this drags on for months and months like people are saying it’s going to, at some point we will have eaten thru our entire stash, and what then?
I’m not even sure if I can grow food this year - I have some seeds started, but last year it was a total fail and I had to buy plants. Which I can’t do this year. And I have no place to grow greens unless I fence in part of the raised bed because we have a bunny problem. And I don’t have anything to fence it in with, I was going to buy chicken wire or try and get some on Buy Nothing but now I cannot do either of those things.
That’s really fucking with my head right now. Possible inability to grow my own food at a time when that would really be helpful.
I agree. Tips for getting him to see that? Or helping him to get over it! I do think to some extent it is a sensory thing. Honestly, I’ve often wondered if he might be very low level on the spectrum, he has a lot of rigidity around minor things like this sometimes.
My grocery order got cancelled last night too so I just shopped this morning. Wegman’s was picked over and they were doing one single giant line so that they could sterilize between people, but Lidl was fine. Somewhat picked over but I got almost everything on my list. Now I’m just waiting for my local farm place to open to get a jug of milk and we’ll be stocked. I hope people continue to be kind and realize that everyone (even the people buying carts full of TP ) are just trying to do their best.
FYI, Hungry Harvest, which does reclaimed/excess produce (and sometimes other foods, depending on what is available) delivery, still seems to be operating as normal, except they’ve waived the fee for customizing your box (and extra sanitizing practices). I’ll know for sure tomorrow morning when our box arrives, but they say they’re still delivering and I trust them to have let us know by now if anything we ordered is unavailable.
These are the areas they serve:
We only deliver to parts of DC, MD, Northern VA, PA, NJ, DE, MI, NC, & FL.
If anyone wants to sign up, PM me and I’ll give you my referral code which I believe gets each of us $5 off This is not an emergency solution since they only deliver weekly on a schedule they devised, but it’s been a huge weight off my mind in terms of being able to stay stocked on fruits and veggies. (Now I just have to worry about milk. And, uh, condoms.)
Now this becomes a game of political “chicken” for leaders: how much economic damage do you accept before taking the risk of lifting restrictions but taking the chance that lifting will come too soon and you’ll get a second spike of cases. Do not envy them.
I have a sore throat. Wheat allergies? Except I didn’t have any wheat yesterday I don’t think?
I passed a neighbor earlier and chatted briefly - she was in her car and I was on the street so probably at least 10’ apart. She still has to go into work as a home health aide and her husband works at a grocery store. They have three kids. She also said they’re down to their last few rolls of toilet paper but there’s none to be had at the store, but she’ll probably grab some from work.
So, from Monday biggest gathering allowed was 500 people. It’s down to 100 peeps and I expect to drop further. My university is making online, everything except the labs that really have to be done in person. Libraries are closing, daycares are dropping numbers fast. I don’t know what the overall picture is, but what I’m seeing looks like enough people are taking it seriously enough.
A resource some may find helpful - online short discussions on how to handle the stress, etc. Many (all?) are free and have free additional resource. First session is today.
ETA: the premise of this work is how to change / develop desired habits
Looked at the list - there is a session next week on Working From Home. There are also existing sets on Hand washing, and (how to stop) Touching Your Face (as a inveterate face touched I will be watching that one).
Seattle is one of the most locked-down places in the country right now, but our Buy Nothing group is still functioning – we have just switched to no-contact pickups. I picked up and delivered a bottle of Tylenol from one neighbor to another (immunosuppressed) – I wore gloves and wiped the packaging down with a disinfecting wipe before I left it on her porch. And I got a lovely 3 mile walk in the sun in the process.
My grocery pickup order got cancelled on Saturday (only one person showed up for the shift) so I went in at 8am on Sunday and it was fine – a few shelves picked over, but most things were restocked. I even got a huge thing of TP.
Even cities in China never did 100% can’t get anything you need lockdown.
I shopped this morning and got everything I need for a couple of weeks. They did not have any tp, but I don’t need any. They are limiting tp, kleenex, and hand soap to 5 per person, which is good. My coworker said they had run out of a lot of things after work a couple days ago, but they must stock overnight. I spoke to someone who shops and delivers, and she said they are crazy busy.
Work finally progressed from “do what makes you comfortable” to actually recommending wfh. On Saturday it was “fuck no, y’all better be coming in unless you’re sick.” Oh how quickly things change.
Work is sooo concerned about us fucking off during this that they are requiring everyone to send an email every day with where they are, what they got done in the last day and what they plan to do the next day.
Not only that, but we already have team meetings (agile) daily where we report the exact same thing.
Also, yoooo, during my depressive times I have gotten very good about fucking around in the office and making it look like I was productive. If someone wanted to, it’s not hard to make it look in an email like they are doing work.
We are having daily video team meetings with our immediate team members and boss. Thankfully my boss is insanely nice, and says these meetings are only to talk about how we are personally feeling/handling the social isolation. So we just chit chat about life for 30 min. My company is by no means perfect, but I’m really impressed with how they are handling this situation so far.
I did my weekly shopping run this morning. Some things were out - rice bins empty. The millet bin was full, so I got that instead. Lots of fruits and veggies available. I think knowing how to cook and make stuff from scratch is a good skill to have right now, I’m glad I learned that when I went GF a few years back. The huge containers of cat treats were out but I was able to get a half size one, so Lil Bug should be set for treats for a while.
I think our country just closed for all non essential business with a dramatic financial package. Thank socialism we can lean into this, hard. But it makes it incredibly clear what the people with more data know and are preparing for.
After this will be a big reset on everything.
@Smacky I also want to know if you’re closer to baseline today.
Someone in my office has started a new Teams channel where we can share photos of our “day” but everyone knows what that really means is post photos of your dogs here! So many cute puppers!
