Covid-19 discussion

Here in Western Australia we talk about after first Covid and second covid. First covid most people would say ended July maybe? Second covid was one case in January.

San Diego definitely has the kinks worked out! I’m sitting in the post-vaccination observation area for 15 minutes right now, with a timer stuck to the hood of my car. It’s like clockwork, literally. Super impressed!

Everything’s bigger in Texas. Just watch those numbers.

Of course, at least Texas had a mask mandate ever.

Yes, but did Texas observe or enforce that mandate? Ha.

I am still waiting to hear whether they are really going to go ahead with forcing back into the buildings full-time whether we are needed for public service that day or not. The good news is, my mom and dad both have their first shots now!

ETA: Is the consensus that surgical masks provide better protection than cloth? I am thinking of switching to disposable because they are so much lighter on your face and I will definitely be at work more often.

Congratulations Texas! Like Iowa before you, you have ended the pandemic!

I haven’t actually seen surgical is better than cloth, but the CDC is saying the combination of the two. Double layer of high quality cotton seems to filter more particles, but the surgical mask is typically better fitting at the bridge.

I did a quick search to see if I could find sources, and found a few that said to double mask, and couldn’t see anything off hand that claim surgical alone is better.

My husband has switched to cloth + surgical. Since I am out of the house for such small periods, I am just doing cloth. I can’t handle that much waste when I have such low exposure (about 5 total minutes a day at the daycare) and low risk category.

According to my co-workers in Austin, nope.

I wasn’t wrong, was I?

Our idiot governor made an executive order on Friday saying that folks 65 and younger at high risk can now get the vaccine. Small problem, no guidelines or updates have been put forth so the vaccine sites are still sticking to the 65 and up rule and the doctors’ offices I’ve called said they aren’t comfortable wiring a note without knowing what the state means by high risk.

Thank you for saving me the phone call, I was half-tempted to see if Mr. Meer’s doctor would write him a note based on some stuff he has even though I know it’s 99% not likely to work.

It still pisses me off daily that I have no idea when we (30s, healthy) can expect to be anywhere near a list to maybe think about possibly getting our shots. Apparently it’s too much to ask that I have any possible way to plan something for my kid’s birthday in June. And by plan something I mean more than zero people coming over. He and I are both coming up on doing our second quarantine birthdays in the next few months. Wheeeeee.

Sorry friend. I was calling for OfMarcela and basically got told how the optics of a doctor’s helping someone in their early 30s get a vaccine when so many seniors haven’t gotten it yet wasn’t worth the risk since there were no guidelines they could point to.

" Biden says there will be enough vaccine doses for every adult in the country by end of May"

Yes, yes, yes!

Doesn’t mean this is “over” but it’s still huge.

And I bet that Austin was a lot better than Midland where my sister lives.

I was expecting like August for myself, so that’s great!

What stresses me out is huge numbers of people are refusing vaccines they are eligible for. Combined with not being able to vaccinate children at all, I don’t know how we can ever reach herd immunity.

Even if I can somehow get vaccinated in May, I can still spread it to my children.

And that asshole trump got vaccinated in secret because it was politically advantageous for his base to be anti vax.

And the archdiocese of New Orleans is telling Catholics to avoid the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

I’m hopeful that this is gonna deal a death blow to the idea that we can leave vaccination a personal decision from a public health perspective.

Once the vaccines are fully authorized and not emergency authorized employers and the military can require them.
