Covid-19 discussion

A breath of good news to share.
I verified this after I saw it because it seemed too good to be true, but 10% of my county has had at least one COVID vaccine shot already.

10%!!!

The ā€œone secondā€ thing is potentially a misinterpretation of someone thinking out loud. One news article I read said someone infected with a new variant did not have prolonged, close contact with others, and had only entered a store ā€œfor a few minutesā€ while masked (I hope the contact tracing was thorough with this patient). So the person quoted in the article was thinking that weā€™ll have to revise what constitutes an exposure, potentially being unmasked near an infected person for any length of time (ā€œone secondā€) could result in infection. But itā€™s guessing, the variants are new and the medical/scientific community is still learning about them.

WOW. Thatā€™s so super huge amazing

jealous whining

But also huge jealousy. My best friend who works in LTC is stuck with neither her, her psws or her residents being given vaccines yet.

I am gobsmacked. Is this in the GTA?

Itā€™s 100% a privilege of living where I do. We have a big university with lots of roll out options, and are the state capitol so thereā€™s a lot of Factors.
Itā€™s unfair and scary how itā€™s not equal.
Currently in my county itā€™s available to people over 65, and people working in HC settings and nursing home settings.

That makes sense.

Yeah

Summary

Itā€™s not elder care LTC, but it is LTC. And several facilities have had outbreaks. Soā€¦ And management sometimes have to go between facilities or meet with staff from different locations.

Good news- elderly aunt in a home is getting the vaccine today.

Not so good news - another auntā€™s sister is confirmed with the UK variant - her son travelled internationally, isolated for 14 days and she still got it. Poor woman just lost her husband a few months back (not COVID related). Hopefully she doesnā€™t have any complications.

For some reason, my glasses are fogging like crazy when I double mask.

I thought Iā€™d sorted out this issue by getting well-fitted cloth masks with nose wires. And the surgical masks I have are also okay when I make sure to use the nose wire. But when I put on a surgical mask followed by a cloth mask, suddenly I can no longer see. Itā€™s driving me nuts. Any fixes for this? Or should I just ditch the double mask if a single mask fits well enough that I donā€™t fog? I wonder if Iā€™m making the fit worse by doubling up and negating the benefit.

I have seen that LTC that doesnā€™t serve elders - despite the fact that most folks in LTC have disabilities that make them more susceptible (i.e. relying on breathing support or ventilators/Trisomy 21) - are not getting prioritized in the same way. Maybe becauseā€¦rampant freaking ableism in all the darn systems.

My system was to renew my contact prescription, which obviously doesnā€™t work for everyone. :-/

We have an extreme vaccine shortage. I donā€™t think this was ableism

That sucks. Weā€™re in phase 1b in my area but LTC workers were first- ahead of every other category.

Yeah, Iā€™ve tried contacts before and they just donā€™t work for me. Even with the astigmatism ones, I end up seeing halos of light around everything when I wear contacts. :frowning:

Given I am currently reading fanfic about magic, maybe your super power is you can actually see auras. But only with contacts.

I just donā€™t understand whatā€™s going on with IL vaccines at all. The state apparently diverted vaccines that were destined for long term care homes, to vaccinate seniors and essential workers who live downstate (none of us up here are getting these). Saying that they overestimated the need at LTC homes, something about them being assigned based on number of beds and not number of residents? And also because not all LTC residents will accept the vaccine.

But then a lot of long term care residents still havenā€™t gotten their vaccines yet and want them, soā€¦???

This is all so confusing.

Finally, the test Kid-4 took on Wednesday came back positive. Now thereā€™s no guesswork with the timeline, which is helpful.

I havenā€™t tried double masking, but I strongly suspect that this is what is going on: Your fit may be good, but it isnā€™t perfectā€“a cloth mask canā€™t create a seal at the top against your face! When you breathe out, the air has to go somewhere. With more layers of fabric, the direction of least resistance is no longer forward; it may be up, down, or sideways, but up is at least one of the options, so more breath is going up and fogging your glasses.

OK, here is the source:

ā€œFollowing confirmation of the variant, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has shortened the exposure time to as little as a second if individuals were not wearing face masks.ā€

To me, that doesnā€™t mean the virus is guaranteed to transmit in one second. I believe itā€™s public health speak for ā€œwe donā€™t really know the necessary exposure time so weā€™re not going to put a limit on it for contact tracing purposesā€
