Covid-19 discussion

Immediately before our 2nd lockdown, when it was a bit crazy here in Melbourne we found the smaller independent supermarkets (eg IGA) or fruit and veg shops weren’t crowded and were well stocked. And the craziness lasted for a day or so max. (May not be helpful or relevant for you considering it’s such a short lockdown.)

I reckon that’d be the go. Or if you have the energy - butcher, baker, candlestick maker, local farm stall.

My farm stall is closed over summer, too hot and humid and pest ridden to persevere they say :slightly_frowning_face:. We don’t have a local fruit shop but there is a foodworks hanging on to dear life next to woolies which is probably good in an emergency.

I think/hope the shops will be fine once the mask mandate is in place.

I think so too. Like the supply chains won’t stop into Brisbane. They just don’t stock the shops with enough to meet panic demands.

Oh they’re not wrong. I got one cucumber before my plants succumbed to a hoard of caterpillars. My zucchini is plagued by powdery mildew.

Supermarket: “If you can’t be trusted not to panic shop…”

Always with the toilet paper (and toilet paper substitutes). Also the flour. Baking is back!

It’s only a matter of time before we have a lockdown. I better check our flour and chickpea supplies.

Yup, we needed to grab a few things from the shops today as we didn’t realise our butcher was still closed for the holidays and I’m going to add on some non perishables too and plan a stock up at the bulk store this weekend. Good thing we got a box of who gives a crap not long ago, tp sorted!

Only two of some of those is way less than my normal grocery shopping, that would be super frustrating and stressful!

The frustrating thing is that there are no problems with our supply chain if people keep shopping as per usual, the shops are not closing, no one is prevented from going to the shops except those who need to isolate and there are options available to them. This lockdown is also only three days long (at this stage).

But for whatever reason people are stripping the shelves completely and causing problems for those who currently don’t have enough food in their homes to last three days.

Never mind hundreds of people congregating at the shops when the whole point of the lockdown is to give contact tracers and testing a chance to get ahead of the virus before it spreads too far.

Sigh.

Virgin Australia have now mandated masks on all domestic flights. Prior to this it was just recommended, I am wondering if this will apply to my work flights as well.

I think I saw in the PM’s wrap up following the national cabinet that masks are now required on all domestic flights as well as incoming international flights. So much news today though, my mind is mush.

As per ABC blog - it’s the Nashy Cab.

We had limits of 1-2 on most of those items for a long time in my stores. It was the only way to keep things on the shelves.

We still do on toilet paper, hand sanitizer, wipes, and some other things. It’s not unusually to have the TP shelves look picked over, or other random things. Mr. Meer had a hard time getting a spice last week because the spices had odd gaps and I’ve noticed some types of string cheese aren’t available any more it seems like, not sure if that’s supply chain or the company decided not to make that product any more or what. There’s plenty of other cheeses, we just have to buy the organic version or a pricier name brand version with less actual food in it per package.

Yeah, for about 6 weeks we could get 1-2 cans of beans at most. I was not thrilled, but often they let me get extra with my obviously veggie cart. That was a pandemic ago!

So Biden apparently plans to release all the vaccine.

I’m not sure that’s a good idea.

How do they ensure people get second doses if it’s all out there?

Super angry about this.

Yeah, I feel like at this point, here there are no specific shortages of entire product lines (other than sometimes cleaners/wipes), but specific brand are out of stock or you have to get the expensive cheese instead of normal stuff or else have no cheese.
For a while our stores had strange brands that I’d never seen before for canned goods and tofu (tofu was super hard to find here in the spring).
