Covid-19 discussion

Apparently funerals are in the list for essential travel, which makes sense. I strongly disagree with punishing essential travel the same way as a covert vacation. And I strongly disagree with this pandemic making you, her and everyone grieve from a distance

This is grim:

Not sure how to keep processing all this grief.

When my aunt died it was in the middle of the period when a religious minority group had lost several teenaged girls at once and had gathered to mourn in Alberta, then had a terrible outbreak within their community across the prairies. There was a lot of racist talk about how those people just had to have their funeral and make everyone in danger from their community. Travelling for a funeral was the most dangerous and selfish thing to do.

Yes Iā€™m still mad.

But if I had flown to Vancouver and infected my relatives that would have been the very worst thing. Public health orders aside, thatā€™s an objectively good reason to stay home.

But Iā€™m still mad.

I have very mixed feelings about life in Australia right now.

I check the case numbers every morning expecting the worst and it hasnā€™t come yet, at least not here in Brisbane. I canā€™t help but think that we have been so lucky. I do not understand how we could possibly have escaped an outbreak following the the amount of Christmas travel that was done, unless heat and humidity does do a lot to prevent the spread?

All the people I know who have traveled long distances have been careful and had a test as part of their travel but even so they have been travelling! (I am not perfect, we travelled too, 2 hours away to the beach across the border where it was crowded and I was anxious the whole time). Looking at how things are unfolding elsewhere in the world, it seems like a given that we are on borrowed time.

I am the same, I feel like its a lot of luck the outbreaks here havenā€™t been worse, especially considering the complacency by most Australians (myself included)

Yep same. WA seems to have forgotten all about it, there is no social distancing in place anywhere I go now and people actively scoff when covid is mentioned now. I keep waiting for an outbreak hereā€¦

Me too.

I think there is definitely an element of luck but Australia is also using (with varying degrees of success!) many of the defenses shown in the diagram (by Australian virologist Ian Mackay) below. Hotel quarantine has massively helped I think. But the new variants are a big test! And not surprisingly, thereā€™s likely less complacency in Victoria and NSW (SA?) than other states.

I like that thereā€™s a mouse chewing on the testing layer.

I was really sad to see that in the chat of one of the games I played a guy from Israel was saying he wonā€™t get the vaccine until he can travel to Russia to get the Russian vaccine because ā€œThe german one (Pfizer) has already killed 10 people, since itā€™s made from RNAā€

Unless we are being lied to, it has not.

I feel like itā€™s been poorly explained to some people. I see SO many things on facebook that say things like:

ā€œWell, if keeping 6 feet apart works, why do we need masks?ā€
ā€œIf masks work so well, why are we on lockdown?ā€
ā€œIf lockdown works so well, why is there still COVID? Huh? Huh???ā€

Iā€™m sure part of it is just people denying reality, but I think many of our control measures were emphasized individually instead of as part of a system, and it shows in our responses.

Thats fair. The fed government wasnt exactly on board with science. I retract my earlier question.

We also donā€™t just have 1 ā€œmisinformation mouseā€ eating the cheese. We have a mouse for each slice of cheese and theyā€™re having a party eating All The Cheese.

I mean, the obvious answer to all of this is, because everyone has to follow the rules for it to work. Everyone has to observe the lockdown and not, yā€™know, illegally eat in a restaurant like the pic above. Everyone needs to wear masks over both their goddamned nose AND mouth and not take it off to talk or cough or smoke around people!!! I personally think that 6 feet apart is the weakest of the above protections since Iā€™ve read stuff saying that people have been infected from farther away; Iā€™m still doing that when I have to be outside in public but am not counting on that to protect me much.

Except the US seems to be taking the stance of ā€œif no intervention is perfect, why even botherā€ rather than ā€œwe need all the interventions for a chance of this workingā€

Buy also, as partner and I were talking yesterdayā€¦ The officials and government have to be wrong because they have to say something and they donā€™t know. So our March 2 week, defeat the beast lockdown with great compliance went on and on and on to almost summer. And there is no omniscient source. And even if we know why the government quarantine isnā€™t working, our brains still say

ā€œNo fair, I followed the rules and they are changing themā€
