Chatgpt scraping forums

I definitely see why people use it for writing cover letters!

I asked a mod over there to delete my whole journal (looking at a few posts it’s not even worth saving for nostalgia) and it’s already gone poof.

Well fuck. I better go try to figure out how to nuke myself from over there. :face_with_spiral_eyes: thank you for the heads up and thank you Lily and Aaron for quick action here.

Well that is fucking gross. Thank you so much for alerting us :sob:

I hate the modern internet so much.

You guys who are going over there to nuke everything please let us know if you figure out how. Though now that it’s in the llm, I don’t know if it matters

Ew. I nuked my entire Reddit history recently, but I forgot about MMM. Idek if I remember my login info.

Thank you @aaronpk !

It was painful and time-consuming, and I only had around 300 posts to get rid of. First I got rid of my “started topics” which took out a swath at a time, then highly sensitive information including in the journals section, just in case, then that left a small handful and I just culled everything because they were all old and unlikely to be useful in the future.

No way to mass-delete as a regular user, unfortunately. I had to find my list of posts, open each one in a new tab, hit “remove” and confirm for each one.

Ew. As ChatGPT helpfully pointed out, I’m over 5K posts over there. Andt they’re now in the LLMs anyway. Not sure what I’m going to do.

I just messaged a mod asking them to delete all my posts.

Rebs messaged to ask why there is a sudden surge of people asking to have their histories wiped. I’m going to screenshot the original post and anonymize everything about it if that’s ok.

If it’s not let me know in the next couple of hours.

This is what I’ll send

I just sent him and Frugal Toque the original MMM thread linked above when they asked the same thing. They already said they could delete all my posts.

Arebelspy’s response to me just now:

Ah, got it.

I actually think that’s not something to worry about, personally.

[link to post which I quote below]

I’ll delete your posts now.

His post in the thread:

ChatGPT is a language model, not a truth bot.

What that means is it makes shit up.

People ask ChatGPT a question, and assume it’s correct because people believe AI knows what it’s doing.

It’s the old “you can’t trust things on the internet” but worse, because it wasn’t even written by a person, just algorithmically generated because it sounded good.

That being said, anything publicly available on the internet is possible for language models to scrape. That’s true of these forums, OMD, or whatever else. The journals, of course, are behind a login, and not publicly facing.

Even if ChatGPT didn’t exist, the public things you post are, well, public

Ok condescending.

Never mind I’ll just tell him to shut his pie hole and delete my stuff.

Politely.

Public doesn’t mean the same thing in the world of GPT and LLMs that are super easy to access and use as it did when some of us were posting 10 years ago. Different queries could be used to say, ok I know this person uses this site, can you find users that may have these details and id someone with very little legwork. Or I’m looking for targets for some crime, so, give me a list of users who may live within 100 miles of me and appear to have many luxury items.

There’s a difference between we hear your concerns and we can’t completely promise to solve the issue (I think having journals locked to trust level is huge and making efforts to deter the bots is also huge) but we did what we were able to and to paraphrase “I don’t care and you’re stupid”.

End rant.

Yea, seriously. Rude.

Ya’ll are assuming a lot of negative intent that wasn’t there.

I’m sorry you saw my response as rude, or dismissive.

While I don’t share the concerns personally, I hear and appreciate them, and we’re already doing our best to alleviate them (both of the things Greyweld mentioned are being done, for example), as well as deleting people’s posts as requested.

I’m a human, trying my best.

oh, I forgot to look at what Reddit has. MM I think I mostly cleaned up before I left, so it should be fine.

I delete Reddit profiles regularly. Shortly after I started with reddit Mr. Star made my front page which was a good reminder that the world is small
