Budgetober Challenge 2025 šŸŽƒ: Let's get spooky and frugal

I’m issuing a challenge: Budgetober, which will run from October 1 - October 31 for the 7th year.

More to follow but you can sign up now!

The goal for budgetober is set and stick to your budget for the month of October. It’s also vaguely halloween themed. Also it has special forum badges and even a STICKER SHEET for people that complete the whole month.

Here are 2023’s stickers

Basic rules:

  1. You must establish a budget, a way to track it, and target amounts for the budget.
  2. Your categories can be as broad as you like, or as specific as you want. You can even just choose a single amount for the month, You can also track + limit one category if you prefer (i.e. grocery spending, restaurants, or stationary splurges.)
  3. You’re allowed one week where you wave a magic wand and ā€œre-castā€ your budget . This means if you go off the rails in a category, or something big comes up, you can set a new budget for the month. Don’t get discouraged just because you have an off week! Jump back on the budgeting haywagon! (I told you this was Halloween-themed).
  4. Each Saturday you use this thread to report how you did on your budget for the week. You can report on where you’re at, and what your biggest challenge and victories of the week were. Then, you’ll put your predictions/goals down for the budget week ahead.

Who This Challenge is For

  • Maybe you’re already great at sticking to your budget , but you want to try out adjustments to your categories or a low-spend month.
  • Maybe you don’t currently do a budget , but feel like maybe your expenses are creeping up and want to use October as a chance to do a check-in and see how you are doing.
  • Maybe you have a new normal - new job, new family member, new location and need to figure out your new baseline.
  • Maybe you’ve been spending a bit too much on take-away orders or planners , and want to dial it back a bit. One months seems doable!
  • Maybe you’re tired of ā€œcleaning upā€ categories the last week of the month - i.e. moving money from a too-full grocery budget into an overspent takeaway category. So the goal here is to change behavior or reset categories to more realistic amounts.
  • Maybe you’ve never budgeted before but it feels overwhelming to start. Perhaps one week at a time, for only a month, seems achievable! You don’t have to do it forever, just for October.

What do you get out of participating?

  • Deep Satisfaction of trying to stick to a budget this October
  • Community support for whatever your budget goals are for October!
  • Budgetober success shout outs on the podcast
  • A weekly CUTE halloween-themed forum badge for participating in the weekly check-in
  • And if you do all 4 week check-ins, you get a STICKER mailed to you. It’s halloween, cat, and budget themed. I will mail these anywhere in the world.

If you’re in to participate (or on the fence and need encouragement), comment below with what you’re hoping to get out of Budgetober and your favorite thing about the halloween season.

Will think about my budget but I am so in

I’m absolutely in, and I think what I need to focus on is new house/decorating spending.

Everything can get so expensive if I let it, but I don’t have to buy much (I’ve been living on my own for 20 years now, I have more than enough stuff). And there’s no rush. It doesn’t need to be ā€œdoneā€.

I am also in, the everlasting topic of ā€œeating outā€. :upside_down_face:

Fun! October is a weird month for my family, so regular budget tracking wouldn’t make the most sense (we are down an adult for about half the month). I will track our recurring expenses and see where that takes us.

I am ā€œinā€, too. I am in the enviable position of having my personal allowance double this year. I will focus my budgeting on my personal spending.

What I hope to get out of this?

  1. I’m going to look over my financial goals for 2025 and see where I’m at.

  2. an awareness of where I’m spending money, and how much - I will do a deep dive into my personal finances.

  3. a new budget - I need an updated budget! I need to rethink categories and amounts to budget in them.

I want those stickers and will think of a budgeting challenge for October!

I need to create a ā€œnew normalā€ plan for October to set for this new phase in my life. An overall budget and category review needs to take place and then put into practice.

we’re travelling for some of this, so I need to figure out what the challenge should be (cost for food per day when home vs. when away?)

Oooo I’m so in.

I suspect groceries will be attended to. I’m also considering pricing out a lil bathroom makeover.

I’m in and will track my groceries category again  will edit my post with a more specific goal later on!

I’m in! I usually track spending but don’t budget. October is when I try to predict in advance! That’s it, that’s the challenge, just try to predict up front and stay within the target.

I’m in! Goals:

  • get caught up on this year’s budget spreadsheet, I’m super behind (again)
  • Track Little Treat and entertainment spending
  • limit grocery spending to $150 - I have a very full pantry and a weekly veggie CSA so this should be pretty doable.

Can I be in with trying to pay the medical bills we owe and not any we don’t owe? And maybe nothing else because I don’t have spoons right now.

So…I was getting nervous about how much I’ve been spending the last while. I thought I better look at upcoming expenses and my financial goals for this year. Good thing I did.

I’m over extended. But I’ve been using the cash envelope system, and doing the 52 week savings challenge, and the 100 envelope savings challenge. I keep emptying the 100 envelope challenge before it’s done. Albeit for good causes - new technology and a GIC for my TFSA. So far the 52 week savings challenge is untouched. It is going to save me this Christmas.

I am, however, doing well on the financial goals I set for myself in January. Just goals and priorities have shifted now. :disappointed:

I guess I took a head start in this challenge. But your post @anomalily , reminded me I hadn’t checked my financial goals status really since spring. Thanks for the heads up!
