A US Election Thread Where We Will Be Nice to One Another (but not to seditionists)

Ours is specifically designed to punish people for being poor. Being poor is a moral failing, don’t you know. /s

There’s this belief if you punish people enough for accessing resources, they will work hard and become not poor.

I’m not even being sarcastic. It is this idea that leads to right to work states and time limits for welfare benefits.

I remember when I found out that Canada just gives you money for having kids below a certain income level and years of america made me be like ?? But you don’t have to jump through rings of fire?

Yep.

Don’t worry, if someone needs more help than that they still have to be humiliated and harassed.

It’s on AGI though, not “income”.

We qualify for a portion of the payment, but wouldn’t if it was just based on our salary.

We qualify fully either way. Still feels weird to me to get $1800. :woman_shrugging:

I mean, it’s about stimulating the economy, not direct help.
If you spend it, you can do so in a way to help those in fields that are struggling.

We are trying to actually spend ours at local businesses and restaurants, which we wouldn’t normally do.

It’s hard not to say “this covers a two weeks of daycare” and just keep it in savings/stocks. That doesn’t help the economy if we hold onto it.

You guys, I feel totally ill and am torn between being glued to news and studiously avoiding it.
Do you all think there is ANY chance of us flipping the senate? Most of me says no way so we’re in for 4 more years of nothing getting done because McConnell, but part of me says, well, no one thought GA would go Biden either…

It’s an edge of the seat thing for sure.

I’m hopeful that enough right-wing idiots will have absorbed the bizarre “the election is illegal so you shouldn’t vote” message from the Orange One and his cronies that that + the new registrations and high turnout from younger/minority voters will swing both seats. But if not, at least there seem to be a few republicans in the senate willing to go against McConnell so hopefully the Biden administration can get their qualified people approved and get the government back to some semblance of normal function. Even if we can’t push through significant legislation just some return to normalcy will be a welcome reprieve.

I’m really more worried about what happens in the streets of DC tomorrow. I just hope that either hardly any right wing folks actually turn out, or if they do there are not a lot of counterprotestors. If they are going to run amok let them do it on their own and then it will be obvious who is causing the problems.

Yes, just having a president who is not actively trying to harm us is going to be a novel experience after the last 4 years.

I’m worried about DC tomorrow too. :frowning:

Here’s another dumb question. Pelosi had to be reelected as speaker. Does Mitch have to be reelected as majority leader? If so I wonder if there’s any chance of the R’s voting in someone less likely to just dig in his heels and refuse to vote on anything and/orsay NO to literally everything except corporate welfare?
Snort, Mitch would probably just refuse to HAVE the vote in the first place.

He already was re-elected in November 2020:

And historically the position has been uncontested. Though I guess if there were enough moderate R senators who wanted him out they could maybe pose some kind of challenge, especially if he has done anything illegal WRT elections. I doubt that will happen, though.

There’s definitely enough people out and about that a friend couldn’t get her kid to daycare today :flushed: the road she needed to use was blocked by a Proud Boys truck with a megaphone yelling about election fraud.

I’m definitely nervous for the next couple days in DC

Ah, right, he is the party leader but not yet certain whether it’s minority or majority.
SIGH.
I’m having very uncharitable thoughts toward this man right now.

I was planning to go to bed early tonight, but it is so so close to both GA senate seats going blue and I’m feeling too anxious/tense/excited to sleep until there’s an answer or I pass out in exhaustion.
