I see the validity of your critique there. What I will say is that people sucked deep into conspiracy theories long enough make themselves mentally ill. Not sure how a professional would categorize it but they develop extreme paranoia and lose touch with (normally agreed upon) reality.
These are my parents…for no reason I really understand except “the economy has been really good!”…my mom voted for Obama both times, yet “could not bring myself to vote for Biden”. I actually don’t even know if she voted at all, because she couldn’t make a decision.
It’s rude to equate political leanings (even ones that are conspiracy) with mental illness. Non-hegemic thinking is indeed fascinating; qanon is just one example. It does not make people less human and bringing mental illness into it is unnecessary.
“Crazy” is not a cool thing to say as an insult. It’s something I’m learning to replace in my vocab too. Much like “lame” etc. We can do better.
I didn’t ask my (expat) parents if they voted, because it’s depressing and the state they vote in isn’t close anyway. They are also 2 issue voters: (1) issues related to the country they live in (or perceptions of that, at least) & (2) taxes.
My Mom called last night, and I vaguely mentioned in my what’s going on, “Well, there is the election” to which my Mom replied, “We know. We have the internet.”
Georgia is pretty close, but so far only military websites are mentioning about military ballots (ETA, okay The Hill has an article). Georgia leans heavily towards service, and service leans heavily towards Republican. In 2016 there were 5k overseas military ballots.
No chicken counting, guys. This is going to take days. Nevada has until 12-Nov, and I think NC does as well; another state with a robust service tradition. Military ballots don’t have to be postmarked by Election Day, they just have to arrive by the state’s cutoff day.
So recounts, right? Why would re-counted ballots be more accurate than initial counts of ballots? Wouldn’t it be more likely for stuff to get lost or whatever? Or for counters to screw up more?
We could theoretically have a minority government, if we were to elect enough “3rd party” candidate - Libs, Green Party, People’s Socialist Democratic League, whatever. However, game theory pretty much means we’re stuck with two party system.
Imagine a system in which you’re voting for Jorgensen, who has zero probability of winning, takes a vote away from Biden. Now, imagine 3,300 people on Georgia doing that, which is the current margin between T and Biden. Biden has lost 3,000 votes, and Trump just won.
According to my google research, absentee ballots must be received by election day in Georgia. The count might flip to Biden after midnight!

Lately I’ve also been using “crazy” in this way, sometimes multiple times a day. Trying to be better. To refrain from stigmatizing mental illness, some alternatives to using “crazy,” “nuts,” or “insane” as pejoratives:
ludicrous
ridiculous
unreasonable
irrational
conspiracist
Okay, 61,000 votes then. I’m uncertain what inspired this correction, though. I was trying to explain to Elle why America is so mired in a 2 party system.
