A US Election Thread Where We Will Be Nice to One Another (but not to seditionists)

Every time I go to reply to something in this thread it is decidedly not nice, so I’mma keep it to myself :joy:

His eyes looks jaundiced.

Also, I live a half mile from where the debate is happening and a terrifying Trump car caravan just went by my house with flags, Honking, and. people hanging out the windows with guns. Blehhhhhh

Also eta if we are actually voting on the VP because they two candidates are so old and likely to die in office, Pence does not look like he is the best bet for candidate that is least likely to die.

This is your run of the mill debate. They’re both answering the questions they would prefer they had been asked instead of the ones they were asked. Which, yes, is better than yelling, but still obnoxious.

Pence obviously doesn’t understand Utah folk- her name is Brecklynne not Brooklyn

(Her siblings are probably Jazzmiynn and Braidenne, Cashe, Dalliyn, and Braxxtonnn)

Looks like the fly won the debate, according to twitter.

Literally all I know about the debate is the fly so it’s a success in my book haha

I thought you were missing a few. It’s hard to keep track of everyone after all.

Kamala is the only one of the four who doesn’t seem half-dead already to me.

I am so relieved the next Presidential debate (if it happens, Trump is threatening not to participate) will be virtual. Even if Trump tests negative, there’s so much Covid in the White House right now I wouldn’t believe that everyone who travels with him is Covid-free.

(This is their live feed, so the headline may not match my comment before long.)

A quote from the NYT article on domestic terrorism (behind a paywall, quoted for relevance).

And a quote from a paper written by the National Institute of Justice, “How Radicalization to Terrorism Occurs in the United States,” from June 2018.

I’m fully fucking alarmed. I mean, it’s not new, but it’s the first reference to inter-American radicalization of…(shit, how do we identify the bog standard of mutt breed only-vaguely-religious American person? People who have no other cultural or sympathetic ties to extremist groups. There. Like that) multi-generation mutt Americans in a popular media outlet.

Is anyone else fully fucking alarmed? HOW SHALL WE FIX THIS?

I am alarmed. But I don’t know what to do with my alarm. I’m in the polarized camp of feeling one side is more “just” in being radicalized (aka let’s do what we need to in order to preserve democracy) than the other.
idk, dude.
It’s fucking wild to simultaneously feel that this increased radicalization is horrifying and also feel valid in my own increased radicalization.

(to be clear, I’m not going out there with plots to overthrow…)

Some of it is innate, a part of the revolution that founded us. Jefferson’s tree of liberty and all. The difficulty is knowing when things have gone so far that revolution is the only choice. Bad as it is out there, we’re not there yet. But the difference between a founding father and a domestic terrorist in some very real way depends on the outcomes of wars.

I’d not thought to have to talk about that in my country, in my lifetime. But we saw it in Tiananmen Square and in the Arab Spring, and we see it other places. If we’d been better at appreciating democracy, we might not be looking at where the line is and who gets to decide where it is now.

Edit: did not mean to shut everyone down - will remove if too stressful (the whole damn world is too stressful enough now)

I didn’t feel shut down. I had to go frighten the ever living fuck out of a goddamn deer.

Yes. The difference between a pirate and a privateer is thin as whatever standard you fly.
