A US Election Thread Where We Will Be Nice to One Another (but not to seditionists)

Hello, I live in Portland, Oregon. Do you have questions for me about the apparent lawless riotfilled place I live that is filled with too many leaves on the ground apparently?

Surprised you can even type to us while getting jostled around by all those lawless rioters…oh wait

Can I take my fingers out of my ears now?

You can take your fingers out.

But the patriarchy will still be screaming.

I saw your county sheriff tweet that he does not in fact support Trump. More lies. SHOCKING

I was over on discord. @Ckni27 kindly relayed the important points for me. I am sorry for all of you.

Any Americans on this thread, please please pay attention to what is happening in belarus. Do not ignore belarus. It might be here in November.

I’m shamefully ignorant of Belarus, but have been beside myself for a week over the Atlantic article about Trump not conceding. It’s detailed, and seems unavoidable.

BBC world service has been doing the best english language news coverage of Belarus I have heard/seen.

Long and short: The president, who lost, declared himself the winner by overwhelming odds and then just inaugurated himself after pushing the entire opposition Party leadership (all 8) into exile or jail (one was jailed After she ripped up her passport at the border to prevent them from deporting her) ALL DESPITE WEEKS OF MASSIVE PROTESTS.

Yes Putin likes this president.

Thank you for that.

If Trump does that it would be so ironic for all those voting for him because he is the “law and order” candidate. In fact, at least here in WI, that’s his biggest campaign point.

Does anyone remember the good old days of debates? You know… where one candidate stood politely by and waited for their turn to speak? And there was no yelling by either the candidates or the moderator? That was a nice way to watch a debate.

I ended up putting it back on, sad that I missed Biden telling him to shut up.
I’m feeling very helpless right now. Apparently it’s OK for the president to incite white supremacists to violence on live TV and no one cares.

I watched the entire thing and it was painful. I was really wishing it was on Zoom so the moderator had a mute button to push. Like most people, I’m feeling tired of Zoom so wishing for Zoom was not my expected response.

I watched the pundits afterwards. One thought that it was exhausting, and represented the kind of chaos that people are just tired of. Another said that their panel of voters felt that they learned nothing, and I felt the same. I don’t think anybody won.

This morning I felt it was a good representation of Trump, sowing chaos rather than demonstrating communication or leadership. I can’t say Biden was stellar or did an outstanding job, as I don’t know how anyone can do a good job in those circumstances.

I feel like his tax returns told a similar story - borrow a lot of money with an overly optimistic and unreasonable plan about how to pay it back.

What’s happening in Belarus concerns me. I’m a little reassured that even McConnell said something that democracy rests on peaceful transition of power, that he would not support Trump if he tried to do something like that. I’m really hoping for a landslide for Biden, but it’s possible even that is not enough.

Turn debates into a game show? Electrical shock if they go over time? Drop in a dunk tank if fact-checkers call a lie?

I didn’t realize this is what he said last night though I did hear him say it. I didn’t know the colloquial connotation of it and now that I do, DAMN.

I feel like he did pretty OK considering that he was getting bullied and screamed at the entire time. No one is going to perform well under those circumstances.

I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned here that a million years ago I used to be a newspaper reporter and sometimes had to cover elections. Every election year since I quit and moved to book publishing, I have said, “thank god I am not a reporter any more.” Because I really hated it. And this… OMG. I told Boyfriend, “how does one even report on this? You can barely even understand what either of them are saying!”

I couldn’t hear anything he said but would’ve heard that. That’s hilarious
