a degree of luck here, there were several other plausible options at this point, and in fact I considered doing something else that would provide more info.
Summary
solution uses ‘3’ twice
but the first few other approaches that came to mind also had at least one double - e.g. 6+4x8= 38, 6+7x6=48, 0+6x8=48, 8+5x8=48, 4+8x8=68, 8+6x5=38…
