And also the ReStore.
Well, I finally found some kids’ undershirts at Vinny’s. They are actually Hanna Anderson tanks, so pretty nice, but they are white so I think we’ll have a tye dye day.
Location constraints mean I have pretty much only good hardware choices (local, then Ace) and a small chain building suppy store whose politics I can’t find online but who at least are small enough they can’t be giving too much money to fascists.
I’ve cut way down on Amazon but don’t think I can cut it out completely. I’ve spent about $100 with them in 2025. I can’t find another source for the (offbrand) Plan B I keep in my office for students - none of the drug stores around me seem to carry it.
What I’ve not solved is Walmart. I whined about it for a while on my journal, but I just don’t have a good option for everyday groceries. I can sometimes get things at Grocery Outlet instead, but they are irregular; their stock just depends on what’s been remaindered by others. All the other grocery stores within 25 miles, maybe more, are just as bad as Walmart and cost more. And we have to eat food. I’m planning to plant more this summer, and we can and do get some food at Dollar General, but its politics are dubious and its labor practices are shirtwaist factory.
But we have hardware and building supply covered!
This is a result of Walmart being so evil, that they’ve pushed out the mom and pops that could have been options for you! It’s ok to not be perfect when your options are bad - this is a group effort!
I’ve never been there and I’m kinda intimidated. Any newbie tips?
Exactly what they have varies by group and location. The one in my neighborhood in Ohio had a lot of household stuff, but here they carry furniture and cabinets and random building supplies and yard stuff.
It’s really just a thrift store with no clothes!
Habitat is faith based, but the ReStore isn’t religious at all, IME. It’s mostly staffed by volunteers so some of them have limited hours.
The ones here will go into your house and deconstruct your kitchen when you remodel and take away the old cabinets.
Like all thrift stores, it’s worth popping in regularly. Go see what they’ve got!
What are people doing instead of Goodreads? Not exactly a buying question but feels related…
Story graph
It’s basically equivalent, and there’s ways to transfer your data that worked well for me, but I don’t think you can do you friends except for manually. I decided I didn’t actually care so I have 0 friends
I also switched to StoryGraph. I haven’t deleted GR yet because I’ve had the account for 18 years and recorded every book I’ve read since then until the boycott started on that site, so it’s just hard to delete it. But I’m not putting any new information on the site.
Thirding storygraph! It’s a great interface and super easy to use.
