There are special termites?
I don’t think they are really special. I have dry wood termites, and most termites around here are subterranean termites. Those are easier to treat. Dry wood requires tenting, which is like…very seldom done in a townhome. The guy was on the phone with his boss outside and said things like “very bad, terrible termites” which was not reassuring.
Oh. Those are what I think of as normal termites hahahahaha.
Is it limited to a small spot? I’ve definitely had landlords just… cut out affected parts of the building.
If it’s not limited, the whole townhome structure might need to be tented. Which is big but.
I think they are definitely more common in other parts of the country. Here we don’t seem to get them as much.
With the HOA I don’t know what they will do! They are predictably terrible about most things, so I’m sure they will just want it to be spot treated and not tented. Since I own the home, I’d prefer to tent. But we’ll see. The termite guy did affirm me in that my HOA is terrible, I guess he’s been trying to get in touch with them about some other pest traps for over 2 years and can’t get a human on the phone, lol
Ew on the ridiculousness of the HOA.
Is the HOA just your building? How close are you to your neighbors? You might just consider addressing it without the HOA being involved at all…
We have both in my condo! Haha fun times.
We do spot inspections and treatment around the complex every year. We have never been able to coordinate tenting and just replace wood if/when it gets dangerous and spot treat as much as possible. ![]()
The termite companies won’t let us address it without the HOA involved sadly. I tried to call several companies before getting the HOA involved because I hate trying to contact them, haha. Sigh. I love my house, and I’m glad I bought it. But never again with an HOA
This is really helpful and kind of a relief. So when they spot treat, do they open up the wall to check for damage?? Or do you just wait to see if something starts failing? I am so uneducated about this…
I have opened up walls in my unit twice (once for a plumbing issue, once for a gut remodel in our bathroom). Both times we have found evidence of both kinds of termite so I call our property manager and she gets the pest control guy out to do a spot treatment. People and animals need to be away from the area for 3 hours. Then we close things back up and go along with our lives. We don’t proactively look for other areas of damage. Maybe everything will collapse someday but the complex is from the 70s and so far with this approach we’ve never removed or replaced any of the boards, just treated because it hasn’t been bad enough to be structurally impacting the wood. (I do have an HOA and a property manager that is responsive)
The internet algorithms are failing me this week – I’m not only getting phishing emails in my inbox, but my social media is serving me up some super crunchy/tradwife content that is deeply disturbing to me.
Eeewwww!![]()
I’m trying to meal plan but everything is either something we just had, too similar to something we just had, or I really don’t want it (even if it’s something we’ve had in the past and liked). I’m annoying myself at this point. Bah.
my goodness you are getting around! That feels like a lot of buses.
My phone’s autocorrect is suddenly smoking crack and changing words to not-words.
I just found out our hospital insurance is switching from Blue Cross Blue Shield to United Health Care on Jan 1.
That’s not tiny.
Luckily our main office/lab insurance is still Emblem Health with the same doctor network, so that’s why I’m counting it as tiny. (Our plan is a weird hybrid, I don’t really understand why, but it’s worked okay so far.)
Just need to stay healthy enough we don’t need the hospital ![]()
I do not control the heat in my apartment, it’s handled by my apartment complex and they always start the heat at the same period every year. Normally, there is always a period of around 2 weeks where I am cold in my apartment and can’t wait for the heat to kick in. But this year ee have an exceptionnaly hot october, like today it’s 22 degrees outside
so I didn’t get that « I am cold » period and honestly I am pissed at Mother Nature!!
Summary
Also, since I gained weight a couple of years ago I am just fucking hot all the fucking time and I hate it!!! I was really looking forward to that little period where I finally feel a bit cold ![]()
Can you open the windows / close the vents?
I can, but I don’t always get a break from that. I live in a tiny studio apartment and have all my windows in the same place. If the wind blows in the right direction it enters in my apartment it’s perfect, but otherwise it’s not helpful. I have a fan blowing on me 24/7 but I do find it a bit ridiculous to have to do that in October
