Things You Did To Prepare For Emergencies

I don’t consider true civil war likely, unless the military itself splits in a coup. However, I do anticipate longer and darker periods of civil unrest and violence, and yes, long term emergencies require a different skillset.

  1. Strengthen your community ties. Think ultra-local, instead of citywide. This may be complicated by the fact that any civil unrest fomented on politics will be ‘frontless.’ Will you pinch your nose, and build a neighbourhood coalition with the guy who put up a Trump sign?

  2. Strengthen your rugged personal skills. Any craft that you’d be even mildly good at. And gain experience in skills you’ve not experience in. Think gardening, preservation, sewing, first aid.

  3. Increase your food stores. Consider stocking up to supply 2,000 calories per person, per day, for 30 days. If unrest swells, you won’t want to be food hunting. Carbs and fats, some protein. Food safe 5 gallon buckets with omega lids are very handy things. As are gallon jugs of vegetable oils. Check out the webstaurant store for such things. HOWEVER, keep in mind that most dried food that comes in sacks need cooking to make them consumable. Oats are the exception.

  4. Consider your bartering abilities. What does your household have extras of; what unique requirement could you produce. As a prod, 9mm ammo is in short supply at stores, but can still be found online. A small stock of bullets wouldn’t be a terrible idea, even if you don’t want to have a sidearm. Shotgun shells for hunting are another possibility.

  5. Sit down with all adults in your household, and discuss who you would shelter, if someone being hunted suddenly fell into your laps. A Christian? A Muslim who believed in Sharia law? A Jew? Include an escalation of punishments. Will you still shelter if the punishment becomes your child dragged out and shot in the street?

I very much appreciate this, Jack. And glad to have already been working on a few of these things, at least.

Thank you.

Yes this is a better way of putting it. It’s going to get darker before it gets lighter.
