Small Things You Did Today to Reduce Your Environmental Impact

I think this should go in a “reducing plastic exposure/use” thread but I couldn’t find one…

I remembered I meant to replace Duckling’s plastic plates etc with bamboo or rice husk. I am having problems finding rice husk or compostable stuff that looks like normal plates, but these bamboo ones are dishwasher safe (and cute colours). Anyone got thoughts/ other options?

ETA:
Oh I just found a “plant based” option on their website that is also microwave safe.

I thought this over for 24 hours and then bought them. Our current plastic children’s items will become our picnic set.

I got some wheat straw plates for a lightweight and unbreakable option when my hands are crap. They are dishwasher and microwave safe. They are fine.

Mine arrived! I am very excited to use them.

Win: going to try to source our meat more ecologically/ethically, found a potential source who deliver.

I needed kitchen towels and wanted to avoid Amazon since I’ve bought waaayyy too much from them since moving: 1. checked CVS and the closest grocery store, neither had any 2. order set of six secondhand from ebay

I have a zip up hoodie with a patch that stands for something I don’t like, so I bought another patch to put over it, so that the textile remains usable!

This humblebrag is a balm to assuage my recent Amazon guilt

While discussing holiday plans with my mum, I suggested we could swap cars when I want to take my family on longer trips and she more-or-less implied yes! My sister also owns a Large Car that they keep mostly for road trips, and otherwise would theoretically be able to swap with us for a while. I may have to check insurance and roadside assistance details, but paying a bit more for that is far cheaper and more sustainable than us buying a larger car.

That means that, for now, we can keep our small car! Hooray!

I got my groceries delivered in paper bags. First time I’ve ever seen them used here. I’ll compost them if I don’t reuse them.

Are things normally done in plastic bags?

(Our city banned single use plastic bags a few years ago… forever happy about that.)

I just placed an order from this local food hub that sources all its products from nearby farms and I purposefully did not buy produce that comes in plastic clamshells (whyyyyy).

Update: the plates, bowls & cups are excellent to use, and I finally ordered some eggs, milk & meat.

Single use were banned last year I think. Thicker ‘reusable’ is still allowed. Paper I’ve never seen used before - not like in the american supermarkets I see on TV. Delivery previously came in reusable bags slightly thicker than single use.

Very interesting indeed! I know that what’s most common varies by area in the US, but you can almost always get paper, at least at a supermarket.

Emailed the maker of the printer I bought to request they stop using polystyrene.

Also (there were other factors in this decision): decided to have holidays at a local place half an hour away, instead of driving 2+ hours.

I’m still not going outside, so I broke out the biggest Tupperware I have. New compost bucket, so I can wait to drop it in the bin.

Has anyone ever noticed that most women’s eco focused social media accounts are “zero waste” (women are automatically expected to respond to praise for restriction) and healthy eco house cleaning while most men’s accounts are alternative energy tech or DIY focused :grimacing: I’m not criticizing either, but something’s happening with the algorithm or maybe it’s just a personal problem with the accounts I follow. I try to follow a mix of all kinds of innovative ideas and eco learning but it’s really slotting into a full on trend.

Yes, I’ve noticed too, and also that I therefore need to add more of my tech/engineering content to my posts.

This is more thinking about the algorithms from Instagrams explore page (also YouTube) rather than individual content creators
