Wanted something new-to-me (stainless steel jugs) so I asked on Buy Nothing instead of ordering any online. Within an hour, two offers of jugs that have been sitting unused in cupboards. Perfect! No need for new items to be manufactured and shipped.
Just researched replacement lids for my tubs so I stop using plastic wrap. Woohoo!
Are you filling them to use as watering cans or do you fill them and place upside down in the soil for self watering?
Also, so sorry for all the likes on old posts, how am I just finding this thread now?!
I’m eating a stupid amount more veggies just within the two weeks of starting my CSA pickups. Thanks to the plastic free July thread, I think I may also now need more kitchen towels? The plain cotton type, I think some folks call them tea towels.
I’ve been wrapping my beets, carrots, greens, and veggie drawers in them and using them to dry veggies after I do the initial rinse.
Some things in my CSA come in plastic bags (like the abundance of peas), but not all. They’re good bags without holes, though, so I’m setting them all aside so I can use them for the herbs in the fridge or for cat litter bags.
When I had tomato plants I put them upside down in the soil because things would dry out so fast
I use old or stained towels in my fridge - if you have a neighborhood group like FB or NextDoor or Buy Nothing I bet there are people who have extra towels they’d give up.
I’ve gotten some of mine at Ikea in the past, too.
@LadyDuck I never thought to look for just the tops! Genius.
I think I’m definitely going to reach out to my buy nothing group next week when I’m okay to drive again and see if anyone has some to part with!
I have a bunch from my MIL that came with her from England. Some have holes, and I love the prints. I just don’t quite have enough to put off a load of laundry of inadequate size.
Oooh I have a good one for today! Our fridge water dispenser needs to be replaced and the new one came today. Every time we replace it we have to run a lot of water through it to get the grey stuff out, now I have a watering can where I can put all that water and water my plants this week with it!
Before I didn’t have a watering can and therefore no way to store that much water.
Oh gosh this defines most of my adult life! And no white clothes because I needed everything to be done in one load haha.
Ooh that is a good one!
I’ve been using the water from my dehumidifier in my clothes washer but now that we’re heading into humid season I should use it on my plants, too!
Our electricity provider lowered the cost of carbon credits, so I changed us from 50% offset to 100% offset.
Washing my son’s new cloth training undies today. Took me ages to find ones we liked, and if they work as well as I hope there are going to be a lot less disposable pull-ups! (In fact I might buy more so there are no pull ups!)
Dug out some cloth napkins and left them on the dining room table.
I’m starting to save veggie scraps to make stock, diverting more things from the garbage. I made sure D saved our corncobs last night!
We have enough doors from our basement and another project where my contractor brought over all the old doors that we can reuse the old doors instead of buying new (even though it costs as much or more, because of the labor). The other project had these beautiful glass knobs and apparently we have enough for all the non pocket doors down there!
And someone from Buy Nothing wants the extra doors!!
My mum who is a person and not a science study, always says that potty training is easier in cloth because you feel the wetness and can make the connections (if your neuromuscular system is ready) I hope that’s true for you and duckling
It depends on the kid. I was the kid in cloth who DGAF about being wet, I had Stuff To Do, so it didn’t work on me! Duckling already toilet trained almost perfectly at the start of the year but stopped because of major disruptions and emotions, I think, so I’m hoping these are a nice bridge between him wanting to be out of nappies and me not having to clean up pee from carpets and couches every day.
I lent my overlocker machine and a fabric cutting mat to my sister, and we agreed we’d like to talk further about what items we want to have on hand, and which ones we’d like to share & purchase jointly in the future.
I have been using solid shampoo and conditioner & body wash for a while. Today I am grateful for having found an all-in-one shampoo+body wash bar that works well for me because it made having a shower and being fully clean possible instead of hard… And it’s better for the environment too.
Are you still using these? I’m looking into alternative detergents that use less packaging.
Yes, we’re using the detergent and now the dishwasher pods as well. No complaints! I really like their packaging, too–the box it ships in is the same reclosable box you store it in, so it’s all recyclable cardboard.
