Small Things You Did Today to Reduce Your Environmental Impact

Hand washing and drying the laundry

Mr H just called our electricity supplier and switched us over to 100% renewable power! :raised_hands:

(We have solar, but still pull from the grid overnight.)

I made crackers to eat with my hommus instead of driving to the shops to buy some.

Another day spent on our feet.

We went to the shops and did an almost plastic free shop. Milk and stickers on fruit being the exceptions. The toddler requested Kombucha as a reward for her successful potty usage (yes really) so we picked one in a glass bottle.

When we were away at Christmas the fruit in the independent supermarket all had paper based stickers, presumably compostable. My goal tonight is to contact Coles and Woolworths asking them adopt this too, given Woolies is the shop I can walk to.

  • Went grocery shopping and used reusable produce bags and reusable grocery bags. Noticed there were paper bags available in addition to plastic :+1:
  • Did not buy any meat at the store
  • Went to Goodwill and found my husband a great fitting used blazer
  • Used cloth period products and cloth rags instead of paper towels
  • Composted my food waste (coffee grounds and ends of veggies)

ETA: kept the heat at 62F (16-17C) and just wore layers.

Worked from home (I mean, i do it every wednesday and friday, but still)
Reduced coffee intake to 6 cups a day (down from 14)
Emailed the company that provides my training courses, asked them to only send the USB drive with the course materials and not the 8 books that are duplicates of what’s on the drive.

Carpooled to the office.

Collecting compostable stuff from home to bring to the office once a week. :3

We bought a heavy-duty citrus press over the holidays and have been making fresh orange juice. No more plastic bottles!

I have a new appreciation for why fresh juice costs so much though.

I’m trying to reduce our food waste; I suspect this will be an ongoing battle. Today I discovered that the eggs in my fridge are past their best before, so Ewok and I had French toast for breakfast. I may need to make several batches of muffins to use up the rest.

Tore all the (used! enjoyed!) pages out of an old puzzle book to recycle them. Apparently the binding and cover can’t be recycled but the paper can.

Oh, and we’re doing a good job of using fans to reduce air con use. We’re still using air con in the afternoons because it’s Perth in summer, but we’re using a lot less. It was definitely worth buying a tower fan for the loungeroom for this purpose.

Brother is taking my stuff to the recycling centre when he takes his own in :raised_hands: so half the petrol will be used, plus it’s an errand off my list.

Made a flourless chocolate cake that used up SIX! eggs. And it was tasty!

Bought a used raincoat through the REI Used section rather than the Outlet section. Same price for less waste, and $40 cheaper than buying new!

Applied for 50% of our electricity to pay for Renewable Energy Certificates. It should be an extra $10/month. After we’re used to the concept of paying a bit extra, we’ll increase the amount.

I found a way to calculate how much carbon to offset! A news article had how much Canada generates. So I looked up our national population, and divided. Then I looked up how to buy carbon offsets and got blocked. The David Suzuki people say I need a gold standard org. Does anyone know of Canadian gold standard carbon offset orgs? I like the idea of doing this as an extra self imposed tax, because it’s so easy. Taxes are great. Take some of my wealth! Redistribute it as needed! Maybe I get some back! Maybe you build a hospital or reduce pollution!

This was yesterday, but I shopped the bulk section and brought my own containers for the first time. The store employee was so helpful and kind that I emailed customer service to let them know how great he was and how excited I am to bring my own containers.

That’s awesome!

I’m still a little giddy every time I do this

I’ve successfully switched from washing my hair every three days to washing it every four days. It’s a huge difference in how long my shower takes and thus, how much water I use.

Had solar power installed.

Decided to buy a stainless steel pump dispenser instead of the pretty blue textured one which was made out of plastic (why? Not glass)
