Small Things You Did Today to Reduce Your Environmental Impact

Oh. This is ingenious, and also a good way to try out a bidet-esque life without having to invest much $$$.

Okay. Gonna do some contemplating, and see what Wizard is willing to handle. (I can’t imagine we’ll end up totally getting rid of TP, in that we often have guests in the house and many will probably not want to partake of a bottle/bidet + cloths, but…)

Thanks for talking about Bathroom Stuff with me, y’all. So many reasons I like this place.

Even if you keep the TP around (I’m definitely keeping it for guests), the bidet is a game changer. I’m so clean, I love it! My Indian bestie got one for her home as well after trying ours (she missed the sprayers in India) and messaged me a couple of weeks ago saying it’s been a year and her tushie thanks me a lot

The nice thing about the bidet is that it very thoroughly cleans the back with water pressure and you don’t need to use your hand (like you do in India). A squirt bottle would work for the front but I don’t think it would be as good for the back

I have wanted a fancy toilet since visiting Japan more than 4 years ago. But I want one with heated seat and warm water. Some even have an air dryer. :stuck_out_tongue: Needless to say, they are very pricey.

OMG - we will be in Japan tomorrow night. My butt is going to be so clean and air dried!

I emailed the local council to request that my verge not be sprayed for weeds or mowed from now on. My little patch is going to become a pretty area of natives and birds. The rest of the street has weeds and lawn in various states from pristine to neglected, so I hope I start a trend!

I’m surprised your council does that! Mine waters verge trees but leaves all other maintenance up to the homeowner.

I don’t know if they spray my particular verge, but I know they mow it or it would look even worse than it does! I’m currently a strong contender for worst verge on the block.

Bought a metal, rather than plastic, climbing frame for Ewok.

Used up veges that would otherwise go bad.

Last night D mentioned that we were going to need coffee soon, so I suggested he order it from the local place. There is a small, organic, fair-trade coffee roastery quite close to us; they are not open to the public, but they sell both in bulk to restaurants and online to individual consumers. My idea was that since they are so close by, he might be able to just pick up the coffee rather than have it shipped, and they were fine with that. Not only that, it was roasted and ready the same day! So both we and they are saving on shipping and packaging, and we don’t even have to use the car to get there.

Made body wash cloths for the bathroom out of cotton yarn I already had, so that DH doesn’t buy another plastic one when the current one breaks down.

Harvested 40 pounds of maitake mushrooms yesterday. Preserved the edible parts, chopped up the woody stalks and have them wrapped in wet cardboard. This should provide a decent bit of spawn material that I can distribute into the dead zones around my neighborhood. (They may set aside a few acres for non-development, but the pollution is real. The maitake and oyster spawn will begin to break that stuff down and let it run healthily again)

Today it is warm but raining so I put on my raincoat and when there was a slight lull in the rain I went out and washed my car, now it’s pouring again and washing all the soap off for me. I used an eco friendly soap.
Not a huge impact, but I’m able to catch this timing a few times a year to get a car or dog wash in.
My pup loves to get all slathered up and soapy and then go for a nice long walk while it washes off.

That’s genius.

A few days ago now: we bought a tower fan. This will (hopefully) replace air con use in the loungeroom or study for the days warm enough to need something, but not hot enough to really need air con.

Local cafe has started using disposable cups for kids again :frowning:. Apparently there were complaints by parents…

I have started asking every time again that they give my kid a ceramic one to use.

Earlier this week:

  • Volunteered via work, using work hours, to support a not-for-profit that redirects useful materials away from landfill.
  • Accepted that I needed new clothing, but only bought needs and not wants.
  • Didn’t turn on the retic as it was forecast to rain. It has indeed rained!

Today:

  • Bought pantry goods in bulk, unpackaged.
  • Used up veges that needed using before they went bad, reducing food waste.
  • Came up with some new vegan and vegetarian meal ideas.
  • Updated the list of what’s in the fridge and freezer, to minimise food waste.
  • Bought coffee beans so we can test out our new reusable stainless steel coffee pods! Can’t wait to see how the coffee tastes.

TIL that it takes one cup of crude oil to make one disposable nappy :grimacing:

I have to buy a package for the hospital. It already felt icky but this is absurd. Older niece is outraged that the hospital demands bringing my own and disposable.

You want to use disposable until after the meconium is passed anyway. It will destroy any cloth ones it’s on.
