Small space living suggestions needed

When I was emerging from a period of food insecurity I had a vast stockpile of food. Now I’m sure I will be fine, but we have weather that can keep me from leaving the house for a few days at a time, so I keep about a week of food around. Plus water, in case that gets interrupted. For me it took a lot of processing to be ok with a small food stash.

My next house is 200 feet from a grocery store so I doubt I’ll have much of a stockpile at all.

I think one of the things for small space stock piles is about the level of variety. When I have more space I stock more variety, but with a small space, a single large bag of flour, a few things of pasta, an extra dozen eggs, an extra kg of peanut butter and a 1.5kg bag of frozen broccoli would cover quite a few days and not be a big investment of square footage.

I think the number of empty kitchen cupboards/the fact that a pantry was standard shows she has less than most. But if we assume the bottom drawer has a bag of oatmeal, a bag of pasta, a bag of flour, another grain and a bag of lentils…it is a stockpile just very boring.

Years ago I saw one of her videos focused on food and her freezer was full and fridge was less bare.

If you own it already, maybe keep it (disguised as a side bench?) and then if it feels like too much for the space then think about getting rid of it? If you dumpster dive and stock up on freezer food during sales, I think you’ll really miss it if you’re unable to have the capacity that you’re used to. The freezers in fridges don’t have very much space, especially if you can’t have a giant unit in your small condo.

It’s way too big for the condo. It’s 36” tall and quite large - when we bought it we had 5 people living here and an empty room for it to go in.

I’m trying to fully furnish it and obsess about everything bc I can’t be in it yet. :worried:
In reality I’ll move what I have and slowly accumulate what I want. It’s fun to talk and fantasize about what to do.

Did you figure out internet yet?

If Comcast services your condo, they have two options:

  1. If you are on Medicaid and/or otherwise meet the income requirements, see if you can get the Internet Essentials plan – this was the one that was subsidized during/after Covid. You have to be a new customer (I tried to see if I qualified just now and they said no because I have existing service)

https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/internet-essentials

$14.95/month for 75mbps

  1. The other low-cost option they have is their Xfinity Now program

I’m seeing $30/month all inclusive of taxes and fees for 100mbps. The other advantage of this program is that you get a free loaner gateway, so you don’t have to buy/rent equipment to get started.

Unfortunately Comcast doesn’t work here. I’m seeing a few plans that would work for $50/mo I think. I do anticipate having to get off Medicaid and getting an actual job soon. Which doesn’t mean I wouldn’t take a discount for a couple months though. I also have a student ID card.

We have Vexus and AT&T and T-Mobile. I have my phone through Mint. I guess this isn’t exactly Small Space Living! I need to start a new thread “How do I? Divorce edition.”

I think this is a related question!

When I divorced I sometimes had a hot spot and sometimes hung out at the library or against the McDonald’s wall. I like the idea of paying $50/month better

Yeah. I just bought a fridge. I 100% felt a twinge of discomfort for buying a fridge. But a girl needs a fridge. And internet.

Fridge and internet seem like very reasonable things.

Is it a basic normal fridge or did you get something nice?

I’ve been living with a French door, bottom freezer fridge. The new house has a standard normal fridge. How long will I live with the downgrade before I get annoyed and replace it? We will find out.

I just replaced a giant French door thing with a standard normal one and I actually love it. It’s so much easier to see and find things. I am a fancy bitch and insisted on black to match the deep freezer, though.

Sometimes I think that if I was left alone longest I’d revert to the version of me who wanted to convert a chest freezer to a more efficient fridge

I’ve had the same downgrade since May. I hate it. But I will continue to live with it until at least next May, probably at least a few months longer.

The spot for the fridge is small. I mean, normal, but on the small side so it had to be a no frills boring fridge. Except that it is new and Energy Star certified (the US’s way to describe very efficient appliances) so I will love it.

It is white. Even though the new dishwasher is stainless and the stove is black. The stove is old so I plan on replacing it. The dishwasher I will get one of those decorative stickers for. It’s a tiny kitchen and I would rather the appliances recede than stand out in the space. And it would have been $200 more for a stainless fridge - which makes no sense to me in an obviously budget kitchen.

I went out diving tonight. 2 dozen eggs and 2 cans of biscuit dough was all I brought home. No good veggies or fruit. There were a lot of instant cheddar potato packets and jars of tomato sauce, but god knows I already have a year’s supply of that stuff.

The first ones of these I saw were shimmering pinks because my instagram algorithm knows me better than my youtube.

This is very random but I found an example of the bookshelves in the hallway!!

That’s pretty funny🤣

I approve of book shelves, for sure. And halls wide enough to have bookshelves.

Latest Pinterest hack idea. The bathroom has a frameless mirror. Which I hate. I’m seeing videos with people covering the edges with black electrical tape to make it look like a modern frame. Or wider black tape with wood grain.

My goal with a $65K space is not to do a $15k remodel. So I’m going to try out super thrifty ideas and then, if I’m not satisfied, I’ll look at buying a new mirror, someday.u

I have some really nice wood-framed mirrors I snagged from my auntie’s place, that I 'm not sure I’m going to have room for. Maybe the universe is telling me I need to spend $$$$ on gas to drive them to LA so that you can have a free mirror. That makes sense, right?

You can also get trim cut to the right size and paint it a classy or obnoxious colour…I could do that to my downstairs bathroom! I am slowly making it a statement bathroom.

That’s what I was going to say…bathroom with (large) unframed mirror that I just cut some trim to fit. And if I remember right they actually sell stick-on framing that’s theoretically even easier, I just happened to have leftovers from finishing the basement:

(ignore the fact that painting supplies are currently living on my bathroom counter)
