Skincare

Is it scented? Scent aggravates my eczema more than anything. It sucks but right after diagnosis you probably need to try a few things out to figure out what works and what doesn’t :frowning:

Nah it’s a solid block of pure Castile soap. We haven’t even received it in the mail yet (I do almost all my shopping online right now). Guess we’ll give it a go anyway, and put more effort into bathing/ moisturising and a bit of the steroid cream. It’s his first eczema as far as I’m aware so hopefully everything we were already using is fine.

OH we did change our hand soap because we ran out of our normal. Hmmm. I might need to adjust some things.

Oh noes! I just bought some last week (or was it the week before last?) I hope it comes back soon. It’s the best.

I just accidentally bought $50 of skincare. With one application I’m really liking the versed moisturizer

The rich moisture cream? Intriguing! I haven’t heard of this brand but the packaging is cute.

This is probably going to sound dumb, but I’m seriously stressing about how to pack all… body items for my 12 day trip. Mostly road trip. We’ll be in one place for two nights, another for three, and another for two. The other four nights are at different places.

When I think of all the products I use in a day, from the basics like my toothbrush and deodorant, to all my skin care stuff and and hair stuff and makeup, wow, it’s a lot. I can’t take it all, obviously, but how do I even choose?? And pack it all??

I use like six different products on my face before I even get to makeup. Then there’s makeup, (god I have so much makeup how will I ever choose which ones to bring with me?) then a few products to wash it all off, and like another six after cleansing before bed. And hair products and normal people soap and shampoo and basic hygiene stuff. And medications! Plus, I probably have to think of basic medications and first aid stuff for the general family. Mom here, too, not just a beauty products glutton.

That’s it, I’m never leaving home again. This is too hard.

eta: But I am open to suggestions/advice. I really feel overwhelmed by it.

I say- skip any actives, keep to basic cleanse and hydrate, pick a shortlist of minimum presentable feeling makeup items (biggest bang for your buck), and do travel sizes for everything you can.

Which make you feel best? I like having masks or serums on vacation because I’m actually more likely to get to slow down and enjoy it. I also buy skin stuff on vacation.

For make-up I choose a trip look that I pack for. Sometimes I used it as an excuse to buy a new palette. But these days my makeup is more neutral and minimalist so I’d bring an eye palette, tinted moisturizer, liner, and mascara. I used to always want bronzer and lips. I actually need a new lip look. Any recommendations? I kinda want to go back to gloss if there’s a non toxic one.

For hair, shampoo, conditioner and one product.

For moisturizer I would bring sunscreen and aloe, you can always use face lotion on your body - rich people use creme de la mer on their bodies!

Oh good point. If going somewhere tropical, I think bronzer is a great idea so you can look “sun kissed” for photos but can still try your best to avoid sunburn haha. Takes away the pressure to get extra sun on the face just so you LOOK like you went somewhere sunny  (is that just a me problem? That can’t just be a me problem)

Does Beauty Counter sell up there? I haven’t tried any of their stuff because I’ve basically given up on makeup for most things, but I have heard so, so many rave reviews. I think they do a gloss. I know people love their mascara especially.

How do I know if I should go to a dermatologist or an esthetician?

I don’t have any experience with estheticians, but in general I see a derm if what I’m doing isn’t working as expected to get a) an actual professional opinion on what’s happening (ie is that really a fungal thing or something else) and/or b) get access to prescription strength medication because what I can get over the counter isn’t working. Or c) to have them tell me that no, that mole still isn’t cancerous. Or d) have them take care of something like an acne cyst that won’t go away and keeps getting inflamed. I’m also highly suspicious of non-medical people poking my skin, but that is 100000% a me problem, and I’ve been lucky to be able to address everything else via copious google searches and obsessively reading r/skincareaddiction and r/asianbeauty plus a few blogs, obviously that’s not something everyone can or wants to do.

I think a dermatologist is a skin doctor and an esthetician does stuff like facials and age-defying laser treatments. Depends on what you need?

I’ve never been to an esthetician, but I am very pro going to the derm for most issues. Firstly because my insurance covers it with a low copay, and second because I can get a medical opinion on what is going on and usually really great advice on products as well. My derm does sell a line of products, but is great about drug store recommendations. I also just like the added set of eyes on any weird skin things/moles I should worry about.

I suppose some of my hang ups are around feelings of futility. Since I can’t use just about anything with breastfeeding and trying to conceive again. But I don’t know if like, I can do the light therapy for hyperpigmentation left from past issues? Who does that? How do I find them?

I went to a doctor who has a medical spa attached to her practice for laser treatments. I feel like most things say not to do them while breastfeeding though. I believe it was like IPL lasers or something if you want to google.

Literally everything has a black box “check with your doctor if you’re pregnant or BFing”. It means nothing beyond “shrug, don’t sue us”.

I sincerely wish I could find the YouTuber dermatologist who broke down a bunch of info. Like how retinoids on the skin get absorbed and what she uses in pregnancy. But I think for the reproductive and bf questions you’re better with a derm than an esthetician. If you want a feels nice facial, the esthetician can do it, but the medical aesthetics I’d leave to a derm for now. (As always I’m Canadian and literally everything is different here)
