How come apps and websites are always asking me to set up a “passkey”? Surely logging in with my phone password is less secure than my site password?

The idea is that it is two factor. Aka you need your phone to do it, so someone using your credentials offsite would not be able to

I’m not sure the actual efficacy tho

It’s a combination thingy! You aren’t actually sending your phone password to the website. The idea is that it helps prevent phishing attacks (where a fake website tricks you into giving up your password).

Each passkey contains a record of which domain name the passkey was created for. If someone sends you a link to a login page on a lookalike domain name, you may be fooled but your browser will not, since browsers can easily check for an exact match. So your browser will not send the passkey to the lookalike domain name and you’ll be safe.

I personally am not using them because I still haven’t decided what to do about the whole “what if you lose your device?” problem.

Well I learned something too ty!

The two factor thing is also true and it’s why it’s a problem if you lose your device!

Basically you aren’t sending the secret passkey to a website when you login, you’re just sending the mathematical proof that you have the secret. Which means that if someone steals that they can’t reuse it.

But that’s also why it’s hard to figure out what to do if you physically lose the device. It would be like losing the only physical key, unless you have a spare key stashed somewhere else.

Wired gets a little more technical here

Ahh, I see. Thanks, that makes sense! But I think I’m still with you on not wanting to rely on a physical device that I could potentially lose…

Some password managers can also save passkeys, but I’m still working out how that works. It’s a big enough pain if you lose a device!!

Should I ModPodge my salt dough Christmas ornaments before applying hangers and decorations?

Are you gluing them on? I think you’ll have to experiment, but I usually put mod pod he on over everything and then a sealer.

The only thing I’m gluing is a ribbon bow. I don’t have any sealer but Mod Podge seems better than nothing!

How are you applying “hangers and decorations”? Is there painting involved?

I use sealer because I think mod podge on its own stays a little tacky.

No painting. Hot glue only. I guess I will see if the Mod Podge seems tacky. I don’t see myself going to Michael’s on Christmas Eve… But if I have Mod Podge and no sealer, that must be what I used when the boys were little and none of the ornaments are tacky. Maybe it sets up better in dry air?

And also because the ornaments aren’t touching other things like paper goods do!

I’m pretty sure we just painted them with acrylic paints and didnt put anything over them.

Anyone have a weekly rotation type house cleaning checklist they like? I’m sure I’ll make my own eventually but it’s nice to have a starting point.

I have one I’ll try to remember to post later.

it may be overkill, but I liked Flylady when I was seeking structure

She was my starting point, too.

I learned from her to always start with a clean, empty sink. To have a clean, empty sink when I go to bed so I don’t start a day with dishes needing doing. I can’t remember anything else from flylady but the sink thing is part of how I operate now.
