Is there a particular one you’d recommend? I know nothing of computers really, so I would rather get a recommendation from a computer person. Is Lenovo a good brand altogether? Or should I look elsewhere? I was only looking at them due to the discount I get as an AICPA member.
I’ve been happy with Lenovo over the past ~5 years. Just sticking with ThinkCentre I see the
ThinkCentre M75q Gen 5 Tiny has comparable specs but a nicer CPU, which also has a nicer integrated graphics chip. But doesn’t bundle the monitor so $759 + $137 = $896. Probably not worth the ~$220 upgrade though.
I see now you’re looking at an all-in-one which is kind of neat (as long as you have no plans to upgrade the computer or monitor separately from each other.)
EDIT: Hope this is helpful. While I have, in the past, gone out of my way to convince people to change their minds I don’t think you’ve made a bad choice. Plus people tend to prefer the things they discover for themselves. So my advice is mostly rambling and thinking aloud. I used to discourage all-in-one computers, but now I buy laptops, which are… all-in-one in their own way. So I’d be a hypocrite! Anyway, if you have any specific questions or would like more specific unit suggestions, I’d be happy to go looking. Are you specifically interested in an AIO, or would also like a small / mini w/ a nice monitor?
Yeah I know nothing of upgrading. I usually keep a computer several years then buy a new one when it starts acting funky. This is the longest stretch I’ve ever gone without buying a new one. I don’t have to get an all-in-one, a small tower with a monitor would work. I just bought an AIO because it was a good price with a nice-sized screen.
It looks like I can get that tower for $629 and the monitor for $122 with my discount. Not a bad price actually.
What do you think of this AIO? https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/desktops/thinkcentre/thinkcentre-neo-series/thinkcentre-neo-50a-gen-5-24-inch-intel/len102c0043
It’s the one that is part number 12SD0048US
It’s $669 with my discount but I wouldn’t get it until August but maybe that’s not a bad thing.
This is the one you shared the specs from earlier?
That compares pretty well then. For $82 more (for the mini + monitor) you get a better CPU, twice the storage (1TB vs 512GB), and a dedicated ethernet port – which only matters if you have your internet connection close enough and/or wired such that you could plug it in. If you’re using wireless then it won’t help.
The AIO includes a webcam and microphone - I didn’t see it mentioned but does it also have built-in speakers? With the mini PC, you’d either want a monitor with speakers, or headphones. And if you use it for video chat, you’d need a web cam, too.
Not sure what you use now. But that could help you form your opinion. Lot of advantages with laptop or AIO in that you get “everything you need”, instead of having to piece together things with a discrete system like the one I shared.
It is different from the earlier one I shared. That one was a I5 core this is a I7.
Can’t tell if it has built in speakers or not. I don’t use webcams on my home computer. We have a wireless router so I don’t need an ethernet port. Honestly at this point I’m kinda torn between the two options. Part of me wants to get the AIO because it’d be easier to set up. But only 512GB storage? Eh not that great when there are options for 1TB.
How much storage are you using now? You can get ~1TB external for $80 or so (later, as needed). Unless you’re already bursting at the seams now?
Definitely missed the difference, but it does seem like a good bump up in CPU over the i5. Good catch. Seems like it’s same price for you?
Yep same price. I would like to get another computer desk too. Our old desk is from when we bought our first computer - in 2001. It’s beat up to hell. Don’t know how much I’m using now, probably not a lot. I keep a lot of stuff in Dropbox.
A low grade daily headache has been plaguing me lately. I would like it to not do that but I’m not sure how it off is even within my control.
It starts as soon as I wake up regardless of how much sleep I’ve gotten. It’s not at the same level of discomfort all the time, there was only one time it was really bad (last Sunday so I was able to say “fuck this” and went back to sleep for another hour and it was much less annoying after that). I’ve been drinking lots of water and haven’t changed my caffeine intake. My only other theory is hormones but I’m on an IUD that got swapped out months ago for the same type of IUD. Ibuprofen doesn’t seem to make a noticable impact.
I feel like if I went to a doctor they’d just shrug at me but should I message them?
Has anyone laid concrete garden edging recently? Like for a flowerbed? I want to separate off a mulched area from the (buffalo) grass. Do I really need to dig a trench and add sand and whatnot?
Ibuprofen often doesn’t help with headaches. Does Acetaminophen/ tylenol help?
And unfortunately I know several folks who have developed headaches from caffeine despite not changing their caffeine habits. Similarly for alcohol.
That being said this sounds like no fun and definitely fair game for a doctor. I would make an appointment for headaches and discuss pretty much what you put here - any changes in food/alcohol/sleep, what meds have helped or not. Be ready to answer how long do they last, how bad are they, do they interfere with work, sleep, driving, reading, television. There are lots of headache meds these days so they might have some options for you!
Sadly, yes, if you want it to last.
A little more detective work:
With it being the same time every day. Are you experiencing a unique exposure at that time? Like the first time you walk into sunlight during the day, or when you kick on laundry and there’s a soap you use, your neighbor in a stinky diesel drives by, that sort of thing? Think through some environmental factors too, and make sure there’s not a likely trigger source there.
Also -
Any allergies?
Any chance of low level carbon monoxide build up in the house?
High blood pressure?
Sinus infection?
Extra stress right now?
This really is one of the “symptoms” that could be nothing, but could be something really serious.
Oh yes, that’s a really good point that I overlooked. Absolutely do a blood pressure check at that time every day for a few days.
It’s as soon as I open my eyes in my dark bedroom before the sun is up. Usually my over night blood pressure is low (as evidenced by occasionally getting the tingling sensation from a limb that would like to be closer to heart level). I don’t have a way to check blood pressure at home.
This might be it. Mr. Meer is working extra hours so I’m basically having to do everything else, including coordinating a major septic project in our backyard (which is now delayed again for Reasons). His project was supposed to be over by now but scope creep is happening and I’m very not thrilled.
It’s not only in the morning, I retreated to my room this afternoon to hide in the dark where no one would talk to me - I was also sleepy but the headache was creeping back and I knew we were going out for dinner to a loud bright place. When we were out to eat I felt okay.
Definitely worth bringing to a doctor imo. Also I’m sorry you’re experiencing this.
I had a long time a headache due to a too high pillow. Laying the night in an unhealthy angle with my neck was the reason for a daily headache. I do not know if that also could be the case for you.
That’s possible. This morning I didn’t have a headache when I woke up, then only vague almost headache feelings coming and going but that’s better than it has been.
That must have been so frustrating to discover but at least there’s a straightforward fix!
I was annoyed but happy to find a solution tbh.
