That makes sense, the parents are thinking in terms of months for development so when they tell their kids’ age to someone else they report it like that. It also explains why I only hear it in certain areas!
I love this it reminds me of Kimmy Schmidt when Jaquolin calls herself a “two twenty fourteen year old” (i.e. 54 years old)
I do this a lot too. My children are both on the bigger end of the spectrum so I say things like “she just turned 2 in January” - that one was recently said to the mother of a little boy on the playground who was her exact same height, but who had just turned 3 in January and who was obviously emotionally much more developed, and who spoke in perfectly complete sentences.
Even after 3 there can be a big change in development between “turned 3 last month” and “will be 4 next month”. On Tuesday at judo we had a 5 year old start who was the exact same height as B. I told his dad she was only 3 and he interpreted that as “must be 4 very soon”. Nope - not even technically 3.5 yet.
I don’t use months at this point though! Just “turned 2 in Jan/turned 3 in Oct” type language
Lately I’ve been saying “she’s coming up on 2.5” because that feels closer than "she turned two in October. She won’t be 2.5 for another two months and I’m sure she’ll be a whole different kid by then. Toddlers… keeping us on our toes!
My Hario electric kettle has sprung a weird leak. It’s a slow drip that only happens if you’re moving it around, not while it’s flat on the heating element or resting on the counter. Still, that means it leaks near-boiling water every time you use it.
Email receipts say I bought it 8 years ago and it gets near-daily use. I like the shape, capacity, speed, and simplicity. For convenience I’m tempted to just buy the same one over again and just expect it to fail in another 8 years. Is that just the lifecycle of a kitchen appliance now?
Does anyone have a Deskcycle?
I am starting to accept that my job is just going to involve a lot of butt in seat and I may as well get some exercise during all these damned meetings. I don’t have room for a treadmill desk and also I don’t think I would have the dexterity to do page layout/design tasks while walking but I could do it while pedaling. They seem expensive, though. Thoughts?
I got one not too long into covid when work was reimbursing for random health-related things, but the angle made it not a great fit for me. My height (ETA–5’2", more torso than legs) and the chair I use were probably part of it, but I was still shifting enough while I was pedaling that it was distracting. I found standing desk+treadmill to be a much better option (for meetings and that kind of thing, for serious focus I just stand or at most use the balance board), but I’ve also been walking to and from the library while reading since I was a little kid so I’m sure mileage varies on that . I’d offer to pass mine along for you to try out, but unfortunately I gave it to my neighbor last summer…maybe there’s someone in your area who has one you could try?
I have one of those! I am 5’2" and definitely struggled to find a chair situation that worked. An office chair on carpet with adjustable height might have been fine. I needed a lot of back cushions to make the seat depth shallow enough for me to find a good posture. All of that to say, you probably won’t have the same issues since you’re taller but it might take some fiddling! I never got to a point where I could comfortably type and use it, but I could e.g. pedal while playing video games or talking on the phone or listening to an audiobook. It was nice for transitioning from being totally sedentary to adding more movement in!
Asking on BN to start with seems like a solid idea, I’d also keep an eye out on Craigslist - around here a lot of people post free exercise equipment.
My Kindle froze, and it’s been frozen for weeks. I tried to let the battery run out, but these fuckers can go forever. I don’t see a hard reset option. It’s displaying a book page.
Does anyone know if there’s a way to salvage this? Using my phone to read books is giving me an eye twitch.
10th gen paperwhite. I have tried holding down the on button, many times, and it didn’t work.
Gah I tried leaving mine plugged in for a few days, which didn’t work. So I switched to running the battery out. But maybe I need to leave it plugged in even longer?
Maybe I’ll just take the $20 trade in value and get a new one. But it’s not that old! Something this simple shouldn’t crap out so soon.
I had a paperwhite years ago that stopped working when it was a few years old. I didn’t think that was old, but maybe for technology it is? Nothing I did fixed it so I called Amazon and they were like “that’s too bad, wanna buy a new one?” No trade in or anything. Now I just read on the Kindle app on my iPad.
I don’t think you can run the battery out if it’s frozen. It’s not using any battery on a static display. I have a very old Kindle Keyboard that still has the same text on the screen as the day it died, years ago.
Yay! I hope it works because I’m pretty sure mine is much older than yours but I haven’t had a single problem with and that seems entirely unfair. I want your Kindle to be nice to you!
