My wife (originally from philly) explained it to me like this

That is an amazing proclamation. “Sleep with one eye open tonight, bird” is absolutely destroying me.

Much unhappiness over tech changes over in Tiny Complaints has inspired me to ask: does anyone know how to get Cortana to quit sending me spam every morning with my “schedule”? Reporting it as spam doesn’t work, making a rule to autosweep it to trash or even to its own little folder on arrival doesn’t work, can’t find a setting to turn off.

This is not a desktop-based deal because I have removed all the parts of Cortana Win10 allows and have turned off all permissions. But my institution uses Office365 so I’m getting Cortana’d over all the internal stuff. Daily. And we have network traffic issues.

I think even when they are sewn in, they are prone to wrinkling and bunching.
Taking them out when you wash, and washing them in the sink (hahaha, like I do that) prevents unsightly bunching.

@Oro I feel like Gritty has already been explained pretty thoroughly above, but basically yeah, he’s our initially-maligned hockey mascot, who we immediately embraced the moment outsiders started making fun of him. Which is peak Philly logic.

He went on to be appropriated as a sort of leftist meme/icon, though now also as a beloved symbol of the city in general. I don’t really have a sense of how much his being embraced by the anti-establishment left has affected his reception by the kind of white people who are often hockey fans but there’s a LOT of fan art of him like eating cops or whipping Trump or inserted into classic scenes of violent revolution. There’s definitely some tension between parties because obviously he’s a corporate product created to sell hockey souvenirs who folks are depicting guillotining Bezos and slashing cop car tires. Also, his social media team is top notch and manages to produce surprising but not TOO subversive content that keeps almost all parties enamored of him.

Legit, if Biden had Gritty’s social team, this election would’ve been called ten years ago (aka Tuesday).

More on how Gritty is weaponized politically. Some militia/Qanon types from out of state rolled up near the convention center (where votes are being counted) in a silver Hummer with a bunch of guns and got themselves arrested. The hummer is still there, and it got both a parking ticket from our infamous parking enforcement and this message on the windshield:

How can I fix rust in my sink? Near the drain and the overflow? Can I, or will I have to replace it to make it not uggggly?

What is the sink made of??

Something like CLR? (Depending on whether it’s safe for the materials involved). Some sort of mild abrasive cleaners and elbow grease, starting with baking soda?

Hi friends
Has anyone here have a pair of Danner boots? How have they held up?

I have a thrift store pair of Ecco hiking boots and because I got them used I’m not quite sure how long they were worn before I got them – I have worn them for two years and they are completely through the sole and I’m not sure they can be resoled.
I’m considering getting the same pair of boots from eBay because the fit is so perfect, but I’ve been encouraged to look at Danner boots by a few people.

Input?

For reference I don’t actually hike hike a lot but I walk between five and 10 miles a day and I also cycle, so they can’t have much of a heel.

Any particular reason you want hiking boots? I personally find low-top trail running or hiking shoes much more comfortable for hiking in and have never understood the appeal. I feel like I hurt myself more with the “stability” of a boot but maybe that’s my disability - my gait is rather odd.

I have heard good things about Danner boots, but no directe experience myself.

Huh. This made me realize I don’t think I knew anyone that didn’t wear boots or high tops of some sort in jobs I’ve worked outdoors with animals. I definitely preferred boots!

Yes.
I often walk in muddy areas and when I wear my trail running sneakers, which I do during warmer weather, mud can seep in over the ankle. I’m pretty whatever about that during the summer, but during the autumn and winter I am not into cold mud seeping over the top of my shoes
I have a bad ankle and like the stability of the boots when I can get it (like I said, I wear trail runners through the summer and am ok trading ankle stability for less sweaty feet for part of the year).

I really love these ecco brand boots I got at the thrift, and am tempted to just replace them, but was blown away with how fast (two seasons) I wore all the way through the sole. Again Ecco is more of a fashion brand than a work brand, so is to be expected, but the actual boot section fits SO NICELY. Sigh.

I know quite a few people who have Danner boots, and another favorite brand is La Sportiva. I think the Sportivas are more comfortable, IMO, but they both will last a long time. Danner boots probably have a longer life potential, especially the classic with the lugged sole. You could probably get that sole replaced for the rest of your life!

Porcelain I think?

That’s probably cast iron with a porcelain enamel coating. You can DIY (or hire a pro) redoing the enamel, I think that’s the only way to fix that, because the rust is coming from the exposed iron.

Oh, well that makes total sense!
