What’s the right word / phrase for when someone cuts fabric without placing the pattern pieces in the right direction on said fabric, so when you wear the clothing item it warps and the sleeves twist and all that?

They didn’t pay attention to the fabric’s grain/grainline (or, that the pattern pieces were cut on the wrong grain, or just plain off grain)?

Thanks CalBal! I want to accurately explain what was wrong with a garment in my online review.

@Ckni27 is definitely the expert and maybe can come up with more (or better?) reasons! But cutting off grain or on the wrong grain can definitely cause twisting!

Nope that’s what it is!

PNW Mold:

It is getting colder and damp. I’ve turned on my heat, but I’m already seeing the start of mold in the windowsills. My apartment is old, my space and budget are limited. For those of you who have dealt with fall/winter mold, what are your tips and tricks?

I’ll be looking for an antifungal cleaner while I’m out and about today.

ETA: By limited, I mean my apartment is ~900 square feet. I don’t have space/money for any appliances. I can maybe spend $30 for cleaning supplies.

I would wipe down daily in the morning to remove moisture. About once a week I sprayed and wiped down with vinegar on the windows. Any warm enough and dry day, I would open up the windows- even just 15 minutes can help. When it got really bad, I bought a small dehumidifier. Be sure to run the fan after showers for 30 min (good fan) or 60 min (bad fan).

Eta this one basically:

Thank you! Definitely have a bad fan. Also have a huge unopened jug of distilled white vinegar - I’ll have to pick up another spray bottle.

I extend my apologies to @druidessie, I had no idea dehumidifiers could be so small/inexpensive. I’m not going to buy one right away, but I’ll keep it in mind as an option.

I guess it’s also time to try to place the screens back in my windows.

Actually I just remembered, we had an even smaller dehumidifier before that one. I got it from buy nothing. Nothing wrong with it, it was just too small for their use. But for our tiny workers cottage at the time it was perfect. Could be worth an ask. :+1:

In combination with the strategies you mentioned, I’m also using one of these: http://www.dehumidifierbuyersguide.com/eva-dry-e-500-review/

I understand that they seem to do better in small places (closets, safes, even small bathroom).

I wouldn’t compare it to an electronic dehumidifier, but I do think it helps a little for a low budget solution in contained spaces.

Oh! Also there’s charcoal bags you can get and “recharge” in the oven or something. I’ve never tried those, but they come up on eco mold guides all the time.

I don’t know about dehumidifying, but I can attest to charcoal bags working for general de-stinking!

But unless you have a good range hood, heating in the oven to recharge just releases the moisture back into the air.

FWIW I hope this doesn’t come off as argumentative, but my house is 730 sqft (minus basement) for a family of 5 and I’d consider a full-size dehumidifier (ours was in the $200ish territory) well worth the space and $ expense to control mold. It’s so much more effective and less labor intensive, well worth the $ in my book.

Ours lives in the basement so I can hook a hose to drain automatically but if for some reason it wasn’t working well enough to control humidity upstairs (like when I was trying to line dry laundry for a family of 5 indoors…yeah not gonna do that ever again) I’d move it upstairs and could easily find a spot for it. We already have 3 air purifiers with a similar footprint to cover that same living area.

Oh that’s a good point as well- the recommendation is to not dry laundry indoors if you’re having moisture problems.
