I might have to check out this movie!
it’s so enjoyable for me, i hope you like it too!
I agree-- but for me part of it for me is also that their “romance” doesn’t have as much time to develop since most of Kate Winslet’s screen time is spent on the story with the elderly man.
true! the first time i watched it, i thought maybe there wasnt gonna be a romantic interest for kate, which would have been pretty subversive for a nancy meyers film!
My friend ended up turning it off 18 minutes in
We watched The Holiday tonight, just in time because its last day on Netflix is Nov 30th! It was a cute movie but I found most of the lead characters a bit annoying, except for Kate Winslet. The Dustin Hoffman cameo was unexpected and delightful!
tonight i’m watching “a castle for christmas,” starring brooke shields and cary elwes. it’s delightful so far and i’m pretty sure hodor is in it too!
ok couple things
- this movie is actually terrible
- it’s not hodor
we’ll see if i make it to the end…
We wanted to watch a movie tonight and this was the review that came up:
“Do not watch this. You will never get this time back. I have a huge tolerance for cheesy, campy Christmas films, but this would never even make the cut on Hallmark.”
We watched Love Hard instead and it was great! Marmalade really liked that the main character was one of the guys from Silicon Valley, who is really funny in that show.
ok it picked up a bit at the end!
Okay this two series of posts was hilarious to me.
the big problem with the movie was the writing. absolutely minging.
also it was supposed to take place scotland so there were lots of wild scots accents and the castle was clearly someone’s house in california.
there’s also a scene where the leads are dancing around a ballroom on “the morning after” and it was just painfully corny.
BUT i liked all the minor characters a lot, and drew barrymore is in it briefly which was hilarious. so. a solid 2 out of 4 stars christmas netflix film. it’s no “holiday calendar” (the gold standard of shitty christmas romances) but i was able to finish it at least!
I forgot this existed and hope I can still contribute.
I watched a bunch over the weekend but I think only one was officially part of this challenge:
- Love Hard
- Over Christmas (series)
- My Dad’s Christmas Date
A listicle suggested a bunch of Hallmark-style Christmas movies that aren’t white people in sweaters. Has anyone seen any of these and are they worth watching? No idea on where each one is available though. All links go to the original slide presentation in the listicle.

I got half way through a Christmas prince last night! Not on this list, but the OG by the sounds of it. It’s charming so far. Much better that the other ones.
A castle for Christmas is probably the worst movie I have ever seen.
Christmas Prince is the one with the actress from iZombie and the prince has a little sister who uses a wheelchair, right? That one cracked me up when I saw a few years ago.
Watched “Christmas at Castle Hart” yesterday with my sister. Not on the list because it’s a Hallmark Channel original. Surprisingly actually filmed in Ireland with real Irish actors playing the Irish characters. A solid 3/5 on the Christmas movie scale.
Jingle Jangle was a delight! I’m adding it to my yearly rotation. The one sour note for me was the postal worker character. She was pushy in a way that in a man would read as borderline sexual harassment. I might be misremembering, but it struck out to me in an otherwise top notch film.
I’ve seen Happiest Season and A New York Christmas Wedding! Happiest Season leans pretty white and was divisive among the gays. My hot take is that if you judge it by Hallmark-y Christmas movie standards, it’s fun and cute; if you judge it by the standards of, are the main characters likable people you want to date and also is it good representation of the diverse queer community, it definitely does not clear that bar. No matter what, Aubrey Plaza looks hot in a blazer and Dan Levy is funny. It’s on Hulu.
A New York Christmas Wedding is… bananas? Like 5X more bananas than, say, A Christmas Switch? I think something went wrong in production because a lot of it doesn’t make sense. Big from Sex in the City is a Catholic priest. I’d recommend for anyone who wants to see the Catholic Church being affirming to the gays, is up for a minor storyline that might be anti-choice if it weren’t so confusing, and otherwise feels like getting in the Christmas spirit by saying … what? The main queer couple is hot and it’s on Netflix.
