Money Saving Mindset- Group Journal

WOW! So, uh…just let me know when you get that guest room all set up. I’m not even picky about sheets, any type is fine with me, I can bring my own if you want!

The guest room is ready! It even has pretty nice sheets, and good pillows. You’re welcome anytime

Oh my what a gorgeous photo!

I need to clarify, this is from the internet. Not from me!! I chose this sunset spot from the photo and will post my own after tonight

The sunset date was pretty nice. Like the rest of the week it was full of some up’s and downs but we had a second date night last night to make up for the downs.

There was a ton of construction at the park (there was also a picture of what it will look like when it is done) so we are excited to have a nice sunset spot so close. There were views of the mountains and downtown.

Looking forward to more frugal date nights.

Oops forgot to Project Spending!

Monday: Did wedding emailing. No money spent…but many plans made to spend money lol
Tuesday: Bought a new Switch game that was on sale for $7. Booked an Airbnb for the NC wedding; we’ll get reimbursed for part of that by SIL and BIL. Toilet paper at Target, but managed to avoid getting Targeted
Wednesday: No money spending needed
Thursday: Ditto!
Friday: Ditto!

Things I should look into buying for future noodle: running shoes, comfy jeans, bras that fit

So, I’ve been doing my weekly budgeting on Friday and that’s been really nice for peace of mind. I want to get to where I can project spending and share with MrM but I am not there yet. I HAVE instituted a personal “do not buy shit til end of month” rule and it has been SO HELPFUL because of random expenses I didn’t anticipate.

Feels good man.

So, here’s a shot at spending for next week? We’ll see.

Phone $35
Rent $1,755
Daycare $1,375
Home Supplies $168
Groceries $100

Not counting pre-tax savings, we have saved about 16% of our income this month. Which feels good!

Novel idea: freezing hommus in jam jars instead of buying glass jars to freeze hommus in. Also, storing carrot sticks in jam jars with water.

Maybe purpose bought ones will turn out to be heaps better but I should absolutely try the free option first!
{This revelation brought to you by having to store jam jars in my glasses cupboard because I’ve hoarded too many}

IME reused jam jars are a little more fragile than purpose bought jars but otherwise work great.

I have not been successful at freezing hummus without changing the texture and would love to hear more about this witchcraft!

Yes, please talk to me about freezing hummus. Do you just make a monster batch and freeze? Do you go very smooth or leave chunkies? Is your recipe low or no water?

I use jam jars for lots of things but not for freezing only because I don’t always have enough.

Buhahahaha what even is money?? We are about to spend a whole host of a lot rather unexpectedly and it feels like money has no meaning.
Gonna need to put some money savings muscles to work in order to offset some of the splurges. Step 1: eat down the pantry, avoid grocery shopping. There is plenty of food in the house, it just needs to be transformed into meals. Step 2: Takeout limited to $50 for the month of October. This should get us 3 meals if we are strategic or 2 normal.

Meal plan for this week. Lunches tend to be leftovers from the night before.

  • Lemon rosemary braised chicken legs with orzo
  • Black bean soup with odds and ends from the freezer(diced ham, bits of sausage)
  • Panko crusted chicken breast with potatoes (Greek)
  • Grilled steaks with wild rice and veg
  • Pasta carbonara

I’m going to refuse my urge to buy more Halloween decorations and if I want more, I need to either make it myself with materials I already have (looking at you porch pillows) or see if I can find it through Buy Nothing. If I’m being honest with myself, we probably don’t have room for much more.

Just got to think creatively

I’m with you @Marcela! Between the vacation and however much this car repair is going to cost I need to seriously watch it for the next little while. At least this gives me the appropriate motivation to not buy cute gym clothes! Did a bunch of cooking yesterday and have packed lunches ready for DH this week so we’re off to a good start. My goal is to not spend any money M-F except on train fare.

I was foiled by some shitty ingredients but I saved dinner and we did NOT get takeaway (which really would have taken more time and energy) or cereal (which I am going to have for dessert anyway). I ended up making a delicious cold noodle salad that I’m adding to our rotation so it actually became a huge win! We’ve added red cabbage to our list of typical foods and it feels like it has opened up a lot of meal options.
