The medium fit all 5 apples with room to spare/plenty of room to tuck under them. The XL I use for big bunches of farm greens, the kind of greens bunches that stick out beyond reusable cloth book bags.
Thing is, once the one farm stand closes in October, there is nowhere to stop on the way home; it’s nearly ten miles each way out of the way to a grocery store. There is now a Dollar General at a crossroad on our way home, and that was a real life changer in terms of keeping coffee and toilet paper, but they don’t sell any produce.
ETA I could go into College Town from the college (it’s a little bit further away), but that means traffic and the psychological barrier of having to drive away from home after work instead of toward it…
Good ideas there on the cabbage and radishes. I like pickles, but he doesn’t. He likes sauerkraut and I have recently developed an aversion.
I don’t know why I’m so concerned about this - we did go a year with only frozen veggies and bagged potatoes/carrots back when I was sterilizing all our groceries in the first part of the pandemic.
So maybe this will be super obvious to everyone else, but it was very exciting for me. I’m always hesitant to buy watermelon, not only because of the work of cutting them up, but because we never go through more than half of it before it goes off anyway. So it feels like a total waste. Well apparently you can freeze watermelon and then it blends up to make really amazing smoothies. So this time I went ahead and immediately froze half of the chopped up watermelon, and will just throw it into the blender for watermelon smoothie is after we’re done with the fresh watermelon. I’ll report back on the results, but this is an exciting lead for me
Chop 'n freeze has been my preferred method of dealing with literally any large quantity of fruit that I have received or bought in the past. I was once given a gigantic yellow watermelon in my CSA and chunks of frozen watermelon got tossed into MANY smoothies and, ahem, alcoholic fruity beverages for some time after that.
I have half a watermelon in the freezer right now! I froze it for the first time a few weeks ago. I got the idea from cocomelon They make ice cream with frozen watermelon and a banana in one of the songs.
Someone in the building across the street moved out, resulting in a FREE pile on the curb. Got 2 TV trays which we can use once our place is in decent enough shape to actually entertain. We could use more places for people to set their porch drinks. That is one thing we are missing in order to have people over, the other being a dining room table for people to sit around and game with Boyfriend. Might end up buying new for that, BN and FB marketplace have turned up nothing, and it’s important to Boyfriend. (So, yes, he is in charge of paying for it.)
They are very light colored wood so they’re gonna need a coat of paint and maybe some glitter, but still, FREE.
I’m hesitant to buy watermelon because every single one I’ve bought this year has been awful. Last year every one was delicious, so it’s doubly disappointing.
We have no trouble eating a whole watermelon if it’s good!
We need a round dining room table that is around 42-48" across. We have been unsuccessfully trying for a few months now to thrift one but no luck, asked on BN with no luck, have been scouring FB marketplace and Craigslist for a while and haven’t seen one that’s the right size that we like (and also most of the prices are not that much lower than buying new, WTF.)
So we’ve come to the conclusion that maybe we should just buy new? We found one on Ikea’s website that we really like, it has an extender so if we had more people over we could make the table bigger, then make it smaller for everyday so it doesn’t take up the whole room always. Problem: it is easily double what Boyfriend was hoping to pay. We had agreed that he’d pay for this as it’s really him who wants the table, so he can host gaming nights. If we split the cost then it is in budget. But I don’t have a spare $250 lying around (the table is nearly $500 and will go over that with delivery) and if I did I would use it to get my hair color done which is really starting to be a need.
Argh, what do? On one hand I say shop around, OTOH this is exactly what we want/need and honestly at my age sometimes I get tired of cobbling together cheap furniture that doesn’t really meet our needs but is just OK.
I did see a few possibilities on Home Depot’s website and we have to go there this week anyway so I think we are going to check out what is there. Their tables were somewhat cheaper but don’t have the extender. And we can see things in person there, where Ikea would have to be shipped as the closest store is in Houston.
Hmmm, I’ll take a look and see if I can find something similar for less. I would caution that the IKEA table is particle board, not solid wood. This may not matter to you but it will make a difference in durability IMO. (Solid wood is going to be more expensive though.)
ETA: This guy is solid wood for $310. It’s drop leaf, not additional leaf, though.
Yeah, I don’t think that solid wood is in our budget. Boyfriend didn’t want to pay any more than $200 but I feel like at that price point we’re only going to find something that’s flimsy and shitty.
So there are these glorious honey oak pedestal monstrosities that were popular in the 80s and 90s. Paired with arrow back chairs. Have a removable leaf.
Ours is 42” across. We got it lightly pre dog chewed on one leg, and it’s been sturdy AF through 4 moves. We got ours for $80 since generally no one wants honey oak. Anyway, I highly recommend looking for one of these beasts. It has survived toddler dance party on the top of it among other things. Totally worth the price of a rental truck and a drive if needed because, at least here, they come up pretty regularly and pretty cheap. You can also call an estate company and see if they have any leads.
Eta also I feel like I need to defend the mess we just got back from a trip and those are clean folded towels and outdoor gear that need to move outside to the garage and cars. It was simply too hot for that bullshit yesterday though.
I think if it’s boyfriend’s table then the whole project of finding it should be his? Unless you are the official shopper in your household or something. IMO $200 for a table is pretty low if you want to have any input on size/style. Even metal tables in that size start around $260. Did you even look at the table noodle posted? I think she did a really good job finding something less expensive.
These are under $200 but if you don’t shop from amazon I assume walmart is out too ?
I mean, fair enough on the honey oak, that would clash violently with everything we have so we would need to refinish something like that. Which we could do, in theory, but considering we haven’t even managed to finish hanging art, WILL we?
We haven’t yet found one on FB Marketplace that is the right size and isn’t obscenely expensive. Seriously, the prices people are asking for used furniture!
