Money Saving Mindset- Group Journal

One thing friends in the desert used to do: punch holes in the bottom of a gallon milk bottle, put it next to a plant, filled with water. The water seeps out. Maybe that would work? I’d be afraid the water would get too hot. But the house was 2 grandmothers, so they wanted easy…

Stuff to cook this weekend:

  • roast potatoes
  • mushroom cream pasta
  • maybe do some more black beans in instant pot for burrito bowls

Oh! Also, I needed vitamins so went to order them at Vitacost (it’s hard to find vegan vitamins in person here at CVS/Walgreens). I had TWO coupon codes that could be stacked. AND, I remembered that during the pandemic they were a good source of nonperishable food too. So I got Boyfriend some of the brown rice pasta he likes, which was $1 cheaper per package than in store. I got myself a few bags of coffee which were half the cost of the fancy stuff I’ve been buying, and also 3 boxes of herbal tea for super cheap instead of buying the fancy stuff at David’s.

I did NOT buy the new Nightmare Before Christmas coffee flavors that just popped up on the site I order from. Because they are $17/bag. Maaaaaaybe at some point I’ll treat myself when they have one of their sales.

Hm, that could work in my bigger containers, maybe? Like DIY drip irrigation.

I’ve seen it done with 2 liter soda bottles, too.

Here I have seen it done with empty booze bottles

That feels very New Orleans. :joy:

I’ve done both and can confirm booze bottles last longer in the hot sun as long as you don’t break them.

Of note, our target still has all of their good and gather brand pasta as $.99 a box for the normal price. The Kroger stuff has gone up to1.25. Small differences, but just in case anyone else is wanting to pasta stock up and has no sale cycles on it right now. I’m in the Pacific Northwest, I don’t know how much is varies by region, but luckily both stores put all their prices on there apps so you can check without going in somewhere.

My friend also said she adds extra spices because the recipes tend to be a little bland.

I ALWAYS use gift cards right away since I was stuck holding one to a store that went out of business. I think I was able to use it at the going out of business sale, but the pickings were slim.

Check to see if the “months” are actually the same number of days. Our utility here can vary almost a week on readings depending on staffing. Or if they estimate one month and then true up to a higher amount the next.

Instead of buying a soy babyccino and 2 soy hot chocolates (and paying the soy surcharge 3 times), I bought 1 LARGE soy hot chocolate and poured it into our 2 kiddie cups at home.

Hmmmm they’re adding a $2 shipping fee on top of my quip subscription. I get a new brush head and battery mailed to me for $5.51 every 3 months. I am no longer sure if $7.51/quarter is a good deal…for a toothbrush head and battery. Gonna need to price out buying a whole new electric toothbrush

Price comparing, Costco edition. These brushes were $99 each I think? And the brush heads were for a long time $39.99 per pack, now they’re $49.99, but I always shop the $10 off sale they do every quarter or so. So $4.40 per toothbrush head.

Plus, no battery! Thank you, this is helpful.

Quip:
Pros—clips to the mirror so there is no counter space needed. This was more important in smaller apartments where I didn’t have any bathroom counter space.
Very handy to travel with (lol not doing much of that)
Set-it-and-forget-it nature of the subscription service works well for health stuff for me. I don’t have a Costco membership so I’d need to get one of those or rely on my parents lol

Cons—kinda takes a while to get a replacement if something is wrong with the new head. The current one is slipping off. Battery is kinda wasteful.

For small spaces, things like this are great:

For normal travel, we’ve had no issue taking these brushes for three day trips and still having them have battery. But I will say that for camping the cold made the battery crap out on it. Just for that day, it was fine after, but it didn’t work when it was cold outside. So now I always take a manual brush camping instead.

And now my electrical engineer husband is telling me about NiCd batteries losing voltage when it’s cold. :joy:

Hahahaha. Noted. I think for camping I’d bring my spare regular. Another thing about the quip is that even if it runs out of battery it’s shaped like a regular brush so it doesn’t feel as weird to use it manually. Argh why did it have to be two whole more dollars!

Aldi had a knockoff sonicare toothbrush in maybe…March? I think they have then once/year. Anyway, it was $29.95. I’ve charged it once since then.

Decided I was tired of paying $6 for puréed soup at the grocery store for this soft food diet the dentist wants me on. So I went to the thrift store and bought an immersion blender for $10 CAD. Regular prices run from $50-100 CAD.
