the original researchers showed this - that kids who had no reason to trust the researchers to deliver the 2nd marshmallow wouldn’t wait (which is obviously rational). but of course nobody tells that part of the story, it’s easier just to say kids need to defer gratification and if they don’t learn that early that they’re screwed for long term life outcomes. Blaming individuals for societal issues is always popular.
