I work at a university and had this conversation about 30 minutes ago:
I’m not sure I’ve met Professor [name]…oh wait, are they the person who wears the [thing] and the [thing2]? Ah yes, I have met him.
There was a guy in my building pre-Covid who literally did wear socks and sandals but instead of plaid pants he wore plaid shorts.
Haven’t seen him in a few years but I think he was software and most of the software folks went fully remote.
We call them leaf hoppers and actually i think i remember googling and theyre not the same but they look the same (convergent evolution ahoy) so i was like “whaaaaa”
Joshua trees are meant to have their seeds spread by giant sloth, which obviously are now extinct. Also does it make me weird that I these sorts of facts choke me up? Like think of being so lonely now in the span of evolution

ETA because we don’t find them eatable and climate change is causing environment loss, we may lose joshua trees. So everyone come see them, Nov-April!
Yep anything North American with giant seeds was for giant sloths is my understanding.
I looked up pictures of giant sloths because in my mind they were ACTUAL GIANTS and surely they weren’t that big, just bigger than current sloths.
But NOPE they are LORG.
If you ever go to John Day area there are fossils!!
