He sounds good! You should give him a chance. I paid no attention to One Direction when they were a band, although I heard a few of their hits on the radio and thought they were fine, normal, OK, whatever, not something I ever pursued finding out more about. And then my teenager discovered them during the pandemic and in particular became a fan of Harry (and Louis) and since she cared a lot I gave Harry a chance and liked him. So he now has three solo albums out and they are all good but I especially love his most recent, Harry’s House. I think I listen to him more now than Daughter does. But it kind of depends on your taste. This new one is a little more on the disco end of the 70’s in influence whereas his first album is more on the 70’s rock end in influence. I mean, in a modern kind of way but you can hear those things. I guess that’s what I’m trying to say. His solo albums are not really like boy band pop albums, despite that being his entrance into being a signer/musician/celebrity person. I’m not sure how I’d categorize his second album, maybe a little more poppy than his first but still full of deep, beautiful, 70s-pop-rock-influenced songs.
If you don’t want to listen to three different albums on my recommendation, I’ll just give you a few fan favorites to try. From his first album, Sign of the Times is great. I also really love Ever Since New York. (I mean, I really like the whole thing. I’m just trying hard to narrow it down here.) OK, one more, Two Ghosts really has that 70’s light rock vibe, too, which I love. From Fine Line, I definitely recommend A Fine Line. And oooh, I love Cherry. I don’t know if it’s a fan favorite but I personally could listen to it all day. I think more of a fan favorite might be Falling, but it’s a bit dramatic. And if you want to feel happy, listen to Canyon Moon. Lights Up is so good, too. Ugh, I’m terrible at this, sorry! I love his recent album too much so I don’t know what to say about that one. My very favorite track is Satellite. But I really love them all and Love of my Life makes me teary. And Late Night Talking and Music for a Sushi Restaurant are so fun!
I also don’t care who he might want to sleep with but it’s true that he won’t say because it’s nobody’s damn business and he gets asked about it a lot and that must be annoying. He has said to the direct statement of “But you’ve publicly dated women” that he hasn’t publicly dated anyone. Paparazzi take pictures of him with people and people think what they want from there.
And boy do they think it! They even all have different nicknames for each opposing side. There are the Halivias, those who believe that he and Olivia Wilde are in a relationship, and there are the Larries, those who believe he and Louis Tomlinson have been secretly together since their One Direction days.
I personally think that it’s true that it’s nobody’s business but also that what is probably more of what keeps him from saying anything one way or another is that no matter what he says at this point, someone is going to feel let down somehow. Because people are like that and the ones who really care that he is gay need for him to be gay. So if he’s not and he says so, they will feel let down and hurt and queer baited. And if he is and he says so, then many will be like, “Why wouldn’t you say so? You left us hanging for so long! You could have/should have stood up for us!” And then the people who were rooting for him and Olivia Wilde will be pissed off that it was all PR and they were tricked. And I just think there’s no way for him to please everyone and I think he likes trying to keep everyone happy and lifted up and just be a beacon for being yourself and wearing what you want and supporting everyone being who they are. And because he came to fame as a teenager in a boy band, he didn’t have much say over his public persona, and now even if he wants to change his public persona, he can’t without making someone upset. So he just says I am who am and it’s none of your business who I have sex with.
