Maintenance Phase Podcast Discussion

See, thanks to working as an environmental engineer that was the one thing I DID know (I dont measure calories for work! But we light other stuff on fire or stick it in an oven to dry out for moisture content). Everything else was news to me.

Ah here we go, carbon content of soils uses a similar test.

Iā€™m starting to suspect scientists just enjoy lighting things on fireā€¦

I am not quite sure how I phrase this but - I want one on the history of the popularizations of some specific ā€œhealthā€ fad diets like Keto, paleo, even the surge of ā€œplant basedā€.

I just have a lot of questions about ketoā€™s surge in popularity and would like someone else to do the research and explain it to me calmly

Those are good ones! Especially keto since itā€™s so freaking old. Like why the resurgence now?!

This is very much a stereotype of chemists*, and chemists are the people who use and love calorimeters (the special contraption for burning things up to see how much energy is in them).

WE DO. :fire: In controlled and repeatable settings.

Oh, I totally agree- I was just theorising on why the uk government might be trying something, but I am also extremely sceptical that it would achieve what they want it to.

Late to the discussion but this podcast sounds right up my alley.
I personally find calorie counts on menus to be super super triggering of past disordered eating behaviors.

Yep I think this is very much true :joy:

Do you want a message or me to post here in-thread based on my experience sort of being on the other side of this?

Whatever youā€™re more comfortable with! <3 Thank you so much.

ETA: Actually maybe DM is best so when I delete my post your stuff isnā€™t all out there. Thanks again! <3

Anyone else can DM me too!

For a topic change: the keto episode is really good! Also I somehow missed the vibrator episode?! So I know what Iā€™l be listening to when I make dinner tonight, lol.

OMG AND THEY DID ONE ON BELLE GIBSON?!?! I followed that in real time. What a fucking wild story.

Have you ever watched the televised interview with her? I remember seeing that and I felt SO vindicated because I thought she was full of shit, lol. Itā€™s my second favorite ā€œballs out crazy woman who someone must stopā€ interview right after the Diane Downs one where she says, ā€œyou canā€™t replace children, but you can replace the effect they give you.ā€ Like, MAā€™AM.

I feel like I should have known about Belle Gibson. Like, that she existed. I am entirely unsurprised about the Breakfast Shows never bothering to do any kind of even brief attempt at journalism/ background check. That wouldnā€™t be fun! These are the same people that have horrible people on regularly because it improves their ratings and then give a not-really apology (and the hosts semi-regularly have these adorable similar gaffes themselves, haha itā€™s OK since they have totally apologised that you were offended now.)

I found the Angela Lansbury episode soothing.
