I mean, I wasn’t impressed with her before (to say the least), and I’m not now, but the more people who speak out against him the better at this point.
Although I’m still torn…the next option is Vance who might not have the whole cult of personality thing going on (not that I’ve got a clue why the lunatic-in-chief has that either), but he’s also a far more straightforward puppet a lot less likely to be distracted by shiny things.
If you have means and opportunity to donate to food banks, consider choosing one that is likely under-resourced (high poverty area/county/state) as well as a local one.
I’ve been seeing a lot of Reddit posts about how food banks are not a viable substitute for SNAP, but one that caught my attention said “I’m in the poorest county in CA so the food bank doesn’t get as many donations as other places”
Thanks for this reminder! I just looked up which counties in my state and home state have the highest % of SNAP recipients and donated to food banks there.
while the university I graduated from is throwing every student under the bus, the organization I worked for is thriving - they hired 6 student employees (I was their single student employee) who have already started providing free breakfast on campus with the SNAP shutdown. they are holding emergency meetings to figure out how to respond to ICE because the school will not protect any of them. I have never been so proud of the people who fiercely stay and fight.
If people haven’t used it before https://hdpulse.nimhd.nih.gov/data-portal/home
has a bunch of data…basically click on the state and then choose what Data Topic you’re looking for (for some reason it defaults to Mortality Map at least for CO which isn’t usually what I want to know, but Poverty is under Social, Economic, and Cultural Env) and then if you switch to table it’s sortable by things like percentage and count.
It’s been really affirming to see the Portland community response to the withholding of SNAP benefits. Without actively looking for news about it, I know the following:
Oregon Food Bank donation site was overwhelmed with traffic
A community bike ride is scheduled for this weekend to go shopping and refill the Little Free Pantries around town
The theatre office I’m working out of set up a free pantry for the students/artists who need it and it tripled in size overnight
Many restaurants and businesses offering discounted/free meals for those who need it - also the farmers markets offering free credits for produce
On the internet and in person, I’m seeing many lists of food resources and ways to get food
