Hello! I am also curious about your reading habits: if you mostly read stuff that other people haven’t, then how do you find new books?
Rabbits, chipmunks, deer, and most recently (sigh) a groundhog that tried to move in under the patio steps!
I do sometimes enjoy a cozy mystery, myself. Miss Marple has my heart, pulling slightly ahead of Lord Peter Wimsey. But I don’t really read much fiction anymore—more poetry, nature writing, essays, non-fiction of various types. Which makes me sound like a snob, but I am all for everyone reading anything they want. The more the merrier!
Oh gosh the books proliferate like rabbits. I guess all kinds of reading works the same way—I spot stuff in bookstores, I chase down books my current book refers to, I follow authors on social media. And I don’t mean “no one reads my books” like some kind of terrible hipster, which I realize is how it sounds—one post and I have dug myself into a hole, ha! Getting a great book recommendation at a party or on the train is something I really miss. I just burned out on novels a few years ago, and that’s usually what people are the most interested in talking about.
I 90% read novels and I know what you mean!
If you have any nature writing to recommend though I’d love to hear it. I adore Annie Dillard and the 4/5ths of Braiding Sweetgrass I have managed to finish.
Which makes me thing I need to read Rachel Carson next…
Do you like short fiction? I just read “If we Cannot Go At The Speed of Light” and it was fun. It took being at book club to realize the two stories I thought sucked were because of cultural differences and then being at home listening to a defector from N Korea to realize some themes were referring to N/S separation. So maybe be more aware than me.
Have you read Desert Solataire?
I am a big non fiction reader. Essays and nature writing are definitely some faves of mine!
You’re speaking my language! My undergrad degree is in poetry. Would love some poetry recs. I try to stay current but there’s also so much old stuff I haven’t read yet
No I have not! It will go on the list
I haven’t read as many of the classics as I should have myself! Have you read Marie Howe’s What the Living Do? It’s one of my favorite books. Thematically it’s pretty sad, though.
Yes I LOVE that one!!!
