Funny Thing You Saw Today

Update:

A sheep farm in Kansas has a working situation that has now escalated to two cats. Along with the border collie who actually moves the flock, there is a senior barn cat named Duke who long ago appointed himself assistant herder, and as of this spring a young cat named Petey whom Duke appears to be personally training in the role.

The farmer says neither cat contributes anything and the flock regards both of them as scenery. Duke takes the far flank in his usual crouch, and Petey now crouches a few feet behind Duke, copying him exactly, learning a job that does not exist from a cat who cannot do it.

The dog, per the farmer, “has simply accepted that there are two of them now.”

And another one:

A community pool in Texas has a summer lifeguard staff and, since June, a self-appointed eleventh member. A cat the staff call Steve climbs onto the base of the lifeguard stand every afternoon, settles at the guard’s feet, and watches the water with what one teenager described as “the exact same energy as the actual lifeguards, but a cat.”

The head guard says Steve has no water-rescue capability and is not on the schedule. He does not scan the deep end and he would not be useful in an emergency. He simply holds the post from open to close, staring at the pool. Management has decided that removing him would upset more people than it would help.
