tbh ime spot clean with soap and water if there were bad spills, picked off dried food with your nails. But mostly it was crumbs, and you kind of shrugged at any oil stains.

They went under the paper plate so they usually didn’t get that dirty.

I think their main purpose was to make the paper plate more sturdy, so yeah they should not have come in contact with the food. If there was a spill I think you just did your best.
