This reminds me of our last dog. When we trained her we used hand signals paired with verbal commands. That was a great when she went deaf and she was still trained. But somewhere around 12 years old she realized that she could just close her eyes and tilt her head back and pretend she wasn’t seeing us making hand signals, and therefore didn’t need to obey anything. 
she gleefully continued this until she passed at 14. Sassy little shit 
We adored that dog.
