If you click on a person’s name, a box pops up which includes a message button!
You can also click on your profile button in the top right corner and on the right there will be a little envelope that lets you access DMs.

Ah ha! I was trying to look from their profile or find a way to start a message and then @ them. I definitely over thought it.
