Week 1 check-in:

I wasn’t going to take part this year as keeping track over the month and comparing year on year was just going to be extremely depressing! However, after doing the grocery shop this morning I’ve found area I’m interested to track.

Goal is to track all supermarket ā€˜savings’. This will be a mixture of short life mark downs (yellow stickers), multibuys, coupons and loyalty points. I will stick to my normal items.

I definitely make an effort to save where I can, so it will be interesting to see how much it adds up to over the month. Apart from the yellow stickers, it’s all a bit of a game with each supermarket playing by slightly different rules. Once I see how much I save over the month I can decide which games are worth playing.

Week 1 check in

Yellow stickers - £10.92
(French fries, GF pie and a pork fillet)

2 for 1s - £2.20
(Oranges and bacon)

Coupon for £5 off £30 spend
(Stocked up on my favourite olive oil to meet the spend)

Total saving : £18.12

Week one:

Looked at monarch twice. Reset various budget categories to reflect expectations this month.
Divided out a grocery order to reflect household goods versus food

Failing: haven’t categorized the last Amazon subscribe and save batch into their respective categories. Technically this was on last months, but it came off pending this month (that lag time kills me) so it feels like I should deal with it!

I made the damn lawyers appointment!

It’s not for a month so my next project is to round up all our account information and our current will and shake loose dd’s info on her disability income.

Week 1 I spent $66 on groceries. I have to do another trip soon and I’m already nervous about making my goal, which is rather important because when I did get those groceries it didn’t look like we had gotten another month of deposit on our card.

Week 1 check-in:

Four days of no spending done, including today.

Spreadsheet not done, not looked at, not attempted. Humph.

But I’m definitely spending less. So that’s good.

Can you prioritize making sure to check in about paperwork at DHS for your SNAP this week? I kick myself for all the times I went a few months without SNAP because I forgot to fill in a form.

Yeah I’m just annoyed because the email said it was due Sept 30 but then when I logged in Sept 15 it said it was late =_=

All the paperwork is done now though, hopefully they don’t kick us off because my parents have been helping us make ends meet lolsob

So far everything is basically on track except that LB’s fencing gear was more than we expected. I’m also not sure if I budgeted enough $$ for winter gear. I think BB’s boots are fine and AFAIK everyone has a coat (the cuckoo could use a more bike-friendly coat, though), but LB will need man-sized boots.

1rst week check-in!
I interacted with my budget 3/6 days.
Eating out: 0/80$
Groceries: 132.96$/400$. It’s a lot, but my fridge was empty and I needed to buy a lot of things. The other weeks should be normal spending.

You are fine!

  1. It’s only the 7th of October today so really this is still week 1.

  2. I also haven’t checked in yet!

I realized that there are probably apps that scan your grocery receipts now and categorize for you automatically, instead of hand-entering in a spreadsheet. And I was RIGHT. So I’m trying out two of them. Here is week 1. Most of the expenses are a big stock up for batch prepping + freezing protein waffles for about 6 or 7 weeks of 2x breakfasts.

Halloween Spending:

  • $44.95 Costume Supplies/$150
  • $28 Yard Decor/$60

Week one was rough. October is such a hard month for me since it’s my birthday and this year is the big 4-0 so i’m very much in ā€œtreat yo selfā€ mode. I’m focusing on finishing funding my emergency fund and then paying off debt as income allows.

OOh I need to go through our coats with the girls. We probably have a few to pass down to you!

Had to spend a lot of money today.

Filling up the car went up by 20 quid from last time, and it still had some petrol left in it! Grrrr…

Then food: Quick emergency food cos I got hungry while out, then a proper mid-sized shop, and then also some stuff I get online because it’s way cheaper.

That last category also includes the hedgehog food. They get through one bag approximately every three weeks. More when it rains because then sometimes the food gets soggy. So I am wondering about putting a link up on the Twitch channel eventually, to see if folks who watch and enjoy the hoggy content might want to contribute a bit to their food, and to the equipment I need down the line, but it’s still too early for that yet I think.

Tomorrow I am going to buy some 18mm ply wood I need for the garage project, and that’s another Ā£36. Am getting the ply new from a builder’s merchants because they will cut it to size for me, with minimal wastage, so it’s 100% worth it to get that done imo.

Then a friend is coming on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon to help fix the large garage door. That too will probably cost monies. It’s been stuck for about 20 years! I think the spring has pinged, so it will likely need a new one. Plus I have zero idea where the key might be. Telling myself that this garage project overall frees up both the house in terms of storage, and finally gets my tools and workshop space sorted, hopefully. That’s the aim anyway.

Plus it’s started raining so the bikes need to come back in pronto (they’re under a tarp in the garden at the moment, and that ain’t good for them).

All of which to say: Spent money yesterday and today. And will again tomorrow. Humph. Regroup after the weekend…

$50.34 today at the market. It actually will count less because I bought planner stickers. But to do this, I literally went thru every block of Romano, so I could get the smallest/cheapest; I got 2 half-gallons of milk instead of 3, 1 carton of ice cream even tho’ it’s on sale, and, and…

But I did it

Total $50.34 stickers $4.99. New total = $45.34

Instead of itemizing the food purchases here and elsewhere I put the detail in my food journal, like I would normally.
