Budget Challenge: No-Stress November (Nov 1 - Nov 30)

Yes! This week’s goal was to cancel my existing health insurance. Trying to find “how to cancel” on the company’s website was near impossible. Google helped. Wasn’t looking forward to writing a letter, and then mailing or finding a place to fax it. Then found another search result on the googs about canceling a Marketplace plan, which I have. Turns out it is as simple as logging in to the marketplace and clicking a button! I could have done this months ago, saving $450/month (I’ve been double covered for … a while).

Edit: realized I never did a goal posting, so here it is after the fact:
Four goals for the month

  1. cancel health insurance - done!
  2. do a partial rollover into an IRA
  3. track Thanksgiving food spending separate from regular groceries, just to know
  4. open new travel rewards credit card

They really hide the cancellation information on the company sites. I had looked and looked and then kept putting off further action. Finally, nudged by this challenge, I bit the bullet and called and the automated system had it as one of the options. Crazy.

Hi!

Week one cash budget went perfectly. I was handed extra cash Tuesday and instead of blowing it on Tuesday I waited and started it yesterday, new cash day!

I have eaten 2 frozen pizzas so far (of goal eat more pizza) and am going to buy ingredients needed for pizza quesadillas when I do groceries today.

No Christmas shopping started yet - they flipped my rotation of Tuesdays so I did two in a row and I had a party last weekend. This is my Saturday to work, so I’m anticipating good shopping next week/end. But I will pull out my cards and start writing a few a day.

Please ensure that I have your address for effective card-recieving.

Please describe. In my mind this is corn tortillas sandwiching jack cheese and pepperonis. Is this at all accurate?

For check-in: I’ve been in the process of making a ~decision around my tracking, which is basically that I’m pretty sure I’m going to drop Mint and instead do fancier spreadsheets. I’m going to sit down with Wizard (who massages data for a living) for a bit of spreadsheet setup advice before I catch up on data entry, as that’ll make the spreadsheets more handy.

Budgeting makes me want to eat. I’ve always been that way - I can restrict spending or restrict food, not both at the same time. Argh.

In this case it will involve corn tortillas a thin inside smear of pizza sauce*, mozzarella, olives and hot peppers. Mushrooms would be welcome. Maybe more pizza sauce for dipping. I’ve used pepperjack or Monterey Jack before. I support your use of pepperoni, but generally find meatless gluten free pepperoni is expensive and/or not at my closest store.

*The really cheap slightly too sweet kind sold by the pasta and tomato sauces. It ensures that your mouth recognizes it as junk food.

I think I have a new thing to make when I get home. This sounds so good.

Removed two accounts (our personal bank accounts) from Mint in the hopes that they’ll stop breaking since connected to our joint account and triplicating things at random. The historical data was trash at this point anyway

But yeah, that’s the step I took today to ensure I’ll keep meeting my tracking goals. I need to go back and make sure the right transactions were marked as duplicates for this month now :woman_facepalming:

EVERYTHING POSTED AS UPDATES TODAY, TOMORROW AND SUNDAY WILL COUNT FOR YOUR WEEKLY PRIZE. PLEASE DON’T MAKE ME SCROLL UP TO ETERNITY TO LOOK FOR PEOPLES’ UPDATES. JUST REPOST THEM. I LOVE YOU.

I called A and was advised that it would take ten days for them to actually close the account in case there were any remaining transactions or autopays coming into the account or whatever. Oh how helpful, Large Financial Institution, how helpful of you to offer to let me get an overdraft fee with you instead of a “this didn’t go through” with some other entity.

Cherry on top - I got an email two days later that the account was closed. Eight days before they said it would be. Whatevs, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

I expect these works of art to be displayed prominently in your homes so all visitors can see them and admire your accomplishments.

Proof of such prominent display will result in some other sort of reward, TBD.

Week 1 Check-in

  • Get a source of income other than OMD
Yes!! I did a lot of work towards this. I had 3.5 hours of job interviews for 2 jobs this week, applied for 2 other jobs, and did a 4-hour project for one of the job apps. I hope I will have an offer in hand next week.

  • Meal Prepping
I will put myself at a C+ for this. I did 5 days of meal prep, but fell off the wagon the past few days and have been back to “make dinner from random fridge objects”

  • One marketing task per day
Yes! Still Proceeding apace, could do a little more.

  • Pre-plan ahead my Cyber Monday spending on skincare -
    Not yet relevant.
