My kids and I have been celebrating this all evening. It is such a huge huge deal!
For some reason i can’t ctrl+F — have we talked at all about the EPA pick? Jacobin was writing about the ties he has to big oil but I havent yet dug into the article and was wondering if you smart people had a TLDR or thoughts?
Fucking Mitch Mcconnell.
I have many choice words for him but as this is the “we are gonna be nice” thread, I will refrain. ARGH!
I really had plans for that money!
I feel, deep in my soul, that no one should ever have to be nice to/about Mitch Mcconnell.
Meeeeee too. My work bestie and I had been texting back and forth constantly about our wild plans for if we were to receive this magical $2k check. I think we knew deep down it would probably never happen but it was fun imagining.
I just told someone on Facebook that I think McConnell should have itches in unreachable places for the rest of his life, and should find dog poo on his front porch daily.
That’s not TOO unkind, is it?
It’s far less than he deserves. He should have the dog poo in the unreachable places.
If Rural takes up Wicca I will go to lengths to avoid having her hex me.
You’re safe from hexes like that. 1) I like you, and 2) no way do I want something like that coming back to me.
I never thought he would actually approve it, but yeah, it would have been nice.
I may have also said to Boyfriend that I hope his penis shrivels up and falls off.
(Uh. McConnell’s penis. Not Boyfriend’s.)
I mean, is this dude’s job literally to just stand in the way of anything good or kind and just say NO NO NO?
Am I reading the news right that Democrats support the stimulus checks, Trump has signed off on it, and Republican senators are showing more and more support for it, and yet Senator McConnell is refusing to have the vote so people can actually access the money?
I think (but ??) McConnell voted against a measure to increase the stimulus checks straight away. Initial $600 payments through perhaps a bit delayed thanks to Trump. Increase to $2000 may go through later.
The $600 stimulus checks were part of the bill that included everything else (extended unemployment payments, rental eviction protection, business loans, state/local funding, etc). They were passed by dem house and repub senate, went to trump, trump said he didn’t want to sign it because it was too little money and should be $2000, then signed it abruptly in the middle of the night on Sunday.
Then the dem house passed a $2000 extra stimulus bill separately (that would up the $600), and the senate dems brought it up to vote. Mitch Mcconnell, senate repub, will not let them vote on it, even though Trump (the repub president) said he wanted it.
The $600 checks are coming, though probably not this week but in the next few weeks.
I just heard someone say that they don’t want to approve the money because half of it would go to people who don’t need it. Probably true, as a lot of people including myself have not been affected financially at all. I can’t imagine there’s any way to easily determine who is unemployed or needs help?
I mean they could literally increase unemployment payments. I would be stoked if they did that
Although unemployment doesn’t capture people unemployed from the “casual economy”- some gig work, under the table work, etc. So definitely wouldn’t capture everyone. Not that payments based on having filed tax returns does, either.
