A US Election Thread Where We Will Be Nice to One Another (but not to seditionists)

Some of my neighbors and lots of local friends have posted that they filled out and dropped off their ballots but we haven’t received ours yet :frowning: I checked the status of mine on the county website and it says it has been received at the post office, but hasn’t been dropped into my mailbox yet. I hope it comes soon!

I’ve seen a good number of the standard size yard signs out for Biden, but today I finally saw 3 houses with big ones out. Like maybe 3’x5’. I was pretty excited to finally see some.

Also… I have a question. I’ve seen bunches of Trump signs that say “no more bullshit”. Wouldn’t that just mean no more of the bullshit we’ve gotten from him for the last 4 years? :thinking:

The signs are a spinoff from the TRUMP 2020 flags, that have a couple different slogans:

  • Keep American Great;
  • No More Bullshit;
  • Fuck your Feelings.

My analysis: flags are important to Americans. Yard signs fade, and get soggy, and disappear pretty quickly. Flags last much longer (I’ve seen a few Trump 2016 flags about), and they carry identity in our country. The Trump flags are, after all flown just under the American flag. I’ve seen a few on the same level as the ensign.

The “No More Bullshit” on the Trump flag means:

  • Don’t Tread on Me (‘dickshit’ is somewhat implied)
  • I do not enjoy the current pace of change in this country
  • The other side are sure being assholes with [insert problem, issue, or contention]
  • Stop trying to make me feel guilty for being alive and white
  • Suck it, we’re in charge, and we’re going to stay in charge
  • Suck it, I am the alpha male.

Those are rough translations. Each flag waver does not necessarily ascribe to all of them, or even any of them. But I’d say a majority of Trump flag wavers, and yard sign’ers by extension (as the yard signs are just a pale extension of the flags), ascribe a minimum of one of those.

I had to drive to the neighboring city last week. I purposely took a rural highway both ways so I could look at fall leaves. This highway has a small town about every 6 miles that you drive through. My state is dependably red and yet I only saw 4 Trump signs in 60 miles*. I was very surprised as this would be presumably be his territory, but not many people wanted to own him. Gave me hope!

*It wasn’t that people just didn’t have signs as I saw signs for downballot candidates.

Husband and I marveled over the exact same phenomenon driving a couple hundred miles of back roads for a funeral.

Those are my absolute favorite ones, for both political and personal reasons.

Guys. That’s an ugly, and frankly unproductive, turn to this thread.

There’s a decrepit and abandoned house in my hometown that has a Trump sign in front of it. That house was repossessed by the bank during the mortgage crisis, and just never resold due to the glut in the market, and the deep depression of the local economy.

There’s a falling down barn right by the highway, about a quarter mile from the turn out to my parent’s that still has a very faded Trump 2016! painted on the side. The owner’s son died from a drug overdose. I went to school with Michael.

Look, I support that certain votes for the GOP in 2020 are being cast by irredeemable orcs and demons. I support that the non-demon vote for the GOP in 2020 is still a vote that is at a minimum a vote that is tolerant of racism.

Treating the second kind of people as demons is not wining hearts and minds. They go low, we go high. Do better. I’ve seen this community do it, and I know we can.

^^ That I just caught up on this thread and I’m gonna echo what @PAWG is saying. This is supposed to be a nice thread. That is true for people not in the thread as well.

(Please note I have the power to edit and delete people’s posts, and also send out warnings, but I won’t do so in order to not remove context. But this is not a productive line of discussion and I will start shutting down posts if necessary or lock the thread.)

Someone’s political opinion is not reason to put their misfortunes on display or use them as an object lesson.

Don’t punch down.

I’ll delete my post

My supervisor of elections office posted that we’ve already had 11% of the electorate return their vote by mail ballots. This give me hope.

Is it correct that the second presidential debate is cancelled? Are there any other major events before 3rd November, or is it each side doing their own campaigning until then?

My understanding was that since Trump refused the debate format, Biden was going to get that time slot to do a town hall type televised event.

There’s a third debate on the schedule still, or was. Best I can tail, that’s still up in the air.

OK, I voted. Does this mean I can just check back in late January and see who they put in the White House? Because that seems really tempting right now.

I mean, realistically your part is done. I see no issue with your request.

Can’t. Gonna throw more money at Biden instead.

Got my ballot in the mail a couple days ago. This afternoon I’ll go through the local information. There are some initiatives that I know I support, and others that I’m not familiar with.
