401k and HSA auto doing their thing, waiting to fill up effing before I touch the IRA again.
As predicted, on track to match the HSA for the year. No clue about IRAs; if we live until December, we’ll see where things stand then and max them out if we can before tax day next year. If we have to choose, I’ll max out his first since most of the other retirement accounts are in my name.
Still on track, somehow!
Monthly checkin, things continue along. HSA at 53.5%, pre-tax 401k at 85.4%, post at 43.9%, and charitable donations at 91.8%, although the last one is a little weird because work has changed its max limits for certain specific events (fires, COVID, social justice, cyclone…basically 2020) so the actual max is likely to be well over 100% by the end of the year. Which is fine, I’m just not going to try to keep up and will measure whatever the final matched donation is against the original plans.
- 2019 Roth IRAs: Both maxed
- 401ks: Mine: $6,591. His: $7,765.
- 2020 IRA’s: Mine, $333, His: $0.
- 2020 HSA’s: Mine: $2,400, His: $1,224.
- Total: $29,914/$70,100, 43% of the way.
We have $2k left over from a triple paycheck month earmarked for investments, but haven’t actually moved them yet.
We’ve officially saved (pre-tax) more than my salary all through grad school, and almost as much as we jointly made last year. This is wild.
Monthly checkin…recent issues with 401k deposits at work that mean I need to play some tricks to actually get close to the full match at the end of the year (or trust they’ll get the true-up right next year, which I don’t), but so it goes. At least my contributions will still make it in. HSA at 61.3%, pre-tax 401k at 91.8%, post-tax at 56.2%, and donations are at 102.2% although there are a couple planned donations still incoming thanks to 2020.
- 2019 Roth IRAs: Both maxed
- 401ks: Mine: $8,539. His: $9,819.
- 2020 IRA’s: Mine, $333, His: $1,000.
- 2020 HSA’s: Mine: $2,567, His: $1,445.
- Total: $35,703/$70,100, 51% of the way.
Easy mode continues to be staggeringly easy.
Thank you @aaronpk for starting this challenge and @anomalily for having this site and making all the challenges. I’m lucky to be in the situation to be doing this challenge, especially considering what a bat shit insane year this has turned out to be, but I went from December-me having an epiphany that, oh, I might actually maybe be able to do this, to current me who has to consider if maybe my work will stop 401k matching as an austerity measure and my reaction is just “Oh. Hmm.”
Like @darlingpants said above, easy mode continues to be staggeringly easy but it wouldn’t have occurred to me to even try to max without this nudge. So, thanks.
(This post brought to you by my annual review at work which used to also be my annual “send paperwork to give an additional 1% to 401k” except I can’t this year cause it’d put me over the limit. Craziness! It still boggles my mind.)
- 2019 Roth IRAs: Both maxed
- 401ks: Mine: $10,886. His: $11,873.
- 2020 IRA’s: Mine, $833, His: $1,000.
- 2020 HSA’s: Mine: $2,733, His: $1,066.
- Total: $41,392/$70,100, 59% of the way.
The “Per Month Target” on my spreadsheet keeps going up, but I did some more spreadsheeting and we’re on track to max the 401ks and HSAs no problem. The IRAs we have a few extra months next year to top up if we need to.
- 2019 Roth IRAs: Both maxed
- 401ks: Mine: $13,233.18. His: $13,927.
- 2020 IRA’s: Mine, $833, His: $1,000.
- 2020 HSA’s: Mine: $2,900, His: $2,688.
- Total: $46,581/$70,100, 66% of the way.
We maxed out both IRAs all at once at the end of February if my comments above are to be trusted and are on track to max HSA. That’ll be all, but some into 457b, too. Not bad.
Just another 1k to plonk into the IRA, and otherwise just let the HSA and 401k continue to auto-fill.
I like this. So close! I don’t I’ll be able to fill the IRA this month, but I’m hoping I can get close.
- 2019 Roth IRAs: Both maxed
- 401ks: Mine: $16,248. His: $17,008.
- 2020 IRA’s: Mine, $833, His: $2,000.
- 2020 HSA’s: Mine: $3,067, His: $3,020.
- Total: $54,176/$70,100, 77% of the way.
Three paycheck months are wild.
IRA is maxed.
401k and HSA are set to max.
I will count this as complete, because I don’t have anything else to do for it - it just happens automatically now!
Realized I missed last month’s checkin…unfortunately just got confirmation that some of what was reported earlier for this year’s 401k contributions should have been attributed to last year which drops where I thought I was considerably for post-tax (57% vs 81%) and will make hitting that max trickier. Going to give it a shot, but these last two months will be interesting spend-wise. On the other hand the HSA is at 84.5%, pre-tax 401k at 98% (that’s correct, at least), and donations are at 129% so those are moving along nicely.
boo hiss I am (probably) going to miss this goal because I’m changing jobs at the end of the year and messed up my contributions to my 401k. I’m going to be about 1k short. I’m going to try to generate some 1099 income to open a solo 401k, but I’m having bad luck with my usual sources.
Otherwise, I have already maxed my IRA and will be able to max my HSA once my final old job paycheck comes in (new health insurance doesn’t kick in until January).
- 2019 Roth IRAs: Both maxed
- 401ks: Mine: $18,415. His: $19,062.
- 2020 IRA’s: Mine, $1,400, His: $2,000.
- 2020 HSA’s: Mine: $3,233, His: $3,241.
- Total: $59,341/$70,100, 85% of the way.
Starting doing my review to calculate hitting all this.
RRSP - I had $17,200 available room for 2020, i will have this slightly over maxed at $17,900
TFSA - I was trending slightly below my max ($6100), so I got my butt in gear and added a QT TFSA account today with a deposit to get me to $6200 for the year.
This challenge is done!
I hit the max on the 4th of this month. DONE!
TFSA contribution limit is 6k in 2020, no?
